Is there an official psychiatric/pscyhological term for talking to
yourself out loud? I do know that its not uncommon for
schizophrenics to have dialogs with people who arent there. I do it
and I do it alot but with me its always a monologue rather than a
dialogue and if someone approaches me or says something I
immediately stop. In a nutshell, I tend to think out loud and thats
what Im doing when I talk to myself in public. :P

I donb't know if there's a trem for it, but I do it too. (No, I'm not schizophrenic.) Even weirder, in my opinion, is my tendency to only say part of it out loud, sometimes suprising myself if I haven't been paying close attention to what's going through my head at the time.
Kind of a "what was I thinking, and where did that come from?" thing.

I am not schizophrenic, but I talk to myself out loud at home if I'm by myself. Lots of people do--NTs, too. It helps me keep track of my thoughts better. They race pretty quickly sometimes, so to say some of them out loud helps me pace myself.

Because my head is so full of thoughts all the time, I've always experienced those moments of "What did I come into this room for? I can't remember!" Talking out loud helps me retrace my steps until I figure out what I wanted before other things distracted me during the 10 feet I had to traverse to do/get the thing I needed. 8O

I think talking to oneself is so common that there's no psychiatric term for it. At least, I hope there isn't, because then we are on the way to every part of being a human being ending up as a psychiatric diagnosis. :x

same here. when I'm having a very hazy day I have to repeat stuff to myself out loud in order to keep my focus on it.

I also do it when following instructions.

and when I have to call someone I repeat the opening sentence out loud a few times.

I am certainly NOT schizophrenic myself either. But I tend to talk outloud to myself compulsively and it isnt just muttering thoughts or sentences, its a full-blown monologue;so its essential a tic or perhaps a stereotypy in my case. What Im wondering is if this particular behaviour is common among folks with autistic spectrum disorders-including asperger syndrome.

I talk to the walls, but only because I know birds live up there.

I talk to myself a lot though, but in my head. Privately.

As do most people. But so-called *internal conversations* are not the subject of this thread. Im referring to doing it vocally, thats why I said out loud.

No psychiatric term because it isn't a problem, I'm assuming.

I've done that a lot lately. Or maybe I'm just aware of it lately. I just hope people can't hear what I'm saying - I don't really want people hearing all my thoughts!

I answered that question, disconsider the second paragraph, it for a bunch of "you know who`s"

Talk the one that matters topic

I have had rude people tell me that if I do this then this is the first sign of insanity.

I ask myself what the second sign is--out loud, so they can hear!! :P

it helps me focus. if there is no one in the room telling me to do this or that, it helps to hear it, even if I have to be the one that says it. i also do it to work out my thoughts. I pretend I'm having a conversation with someone, and act as if I'm explaining it to them. I think it helps me be more articulate because i've learned how to process those ideas into good sentences.

I'm not schizophrenic, and neither am I.

I do this. My daughter asked me who I was talking to the other day. I think it helps me clarify things.
But, I occasionally do the opposite. Where I think I said something to someone, and actually didn't say anything. - Maybe its just my imaginary friend doing all the talking.

I think everyone does this LOL! :-) Not sure if there's a term for it though.

  I am constantly asking myself why did I come into this room? Also I talk to animals and inanimate objects a lot. Yesterday I told the sprayer, There you are! I have been looking for you all summer!

I sing to myself a lot, usually something appropriate to my mood at the time.
