Been doing that for years! Clicking my teeth and spinning, spinning my whole body around. Have worn holes in a great many socks, created thin patches in carpet, and also developed a set of wicked calluses on my feet!  |

| Okay when I was younger I had a problem with sucking my four fingers,I did this for many many years whenever i was bored or ready to go to bed. I got to the age 13-14 and i decided enough is enough. Right after i picked up on a habit with biting the sides of my mouth thus tearing them apart . I really needed to stop this lol.So i finally quit everything and felt fine for about a month when i began to do this really weird yet soothing thing with my teeth. I would click them from side to side like i would move my bottom jaw left and right making a clicking noise in my mouth and i began to do this ALOT. I still do this and it is driving me crazy. I do this clicking thing to words for example, the word Cat...c click a click t click and i will just come up with more and more words. I also do this to peoples faces, i click my teeth to words trying to match the same amount of letters as there is on their face. okay another example is one letter would be someones ear then their eye then their nostril then their other nostril and so on going back and forth from one side of their face to the other. I am restless and i cannot stop this no matter how hard i try.When i go to sleep at night i have to click at least three words to each square on my ceiling until i get a headache and fall asleep. I don't know if anybody can relate exactly to this but it would be great to know that at least one person found this familiar |

I don't click my teeth, but I slide my top front teeth against my bottom front teeth. I like the smooth feeling. I also often do it to the rhythm of whatever song is running through my head.
Incidentally, my older son, who is HFA, absolutely cannot stand the sound of clicking teeth. It is the one noise that will make him cover his ears and scream.

Are you sure its voluntary? Do you do it in your sleep? Involuntary teeth clattering can be signs of Oromandibular Dystonia and Iron deficiency. But I don't know what it is if its truly voluntary. But you should find a way to stop it whatever it is before you wear your teeth done to nubs. My ex-girlfriend grind her teeth at night till she had little nubs for teeth and had all these nasty surgeries where the dentist trimmed her gumline to expose more teeth.

I click my teeth with my tongue. I've only been doing it for a couple of years though. I used to bite the side of my mouth too. And run my tongue up the roof of my mouth.

Grinding? Better watch that I started to lightly grind my front teeth then I started to grind my side teeth.
My sister would grind for years until I noticed her front teeth were smaller than mine. |

If anyone is a night grinder they should wear a mouthguard to protect their teeth. Never mind the dentists who want to sell a guard for $300. There's no reason to spend that much or even spend the $32 to get an "official" no teeth grinding mouthguard at the drugstore. You can get a football mouthguard at Walmart for 96 cents which is the same quality. You drop it in boiling water to soften it then pop it in mouth to mold to fit your teeth then plop it in cold water to reharden the guard. Just make sure you get the kinda football guard that doesn't have the strap attached because those are irritating to sleep in.

I used to suck my toes...
Anyway back to the main subject. I grind my teeth almost incessantly and it drives me insane. I think it is a nervous thing because if I take Lorazepam (a sedative) it stops. I often grind in time to music (either real or in my head). I don't notice I am doing it half the time. It makes me feel SO unwell though because it makes my jaw hurt which in turn makes my ears hurt, then I get a stomach ache and I panic so much that I also get joint seizure.

For me, it's both voluntary and involuntary. Voluntary, I click out phat rythms inside my skull. Involuntarily, I wear down the enamel on my teeth.  |

I've found my way to this forum as, for a heck of a long time now, I've been wondering if what I have been doing is a known symptom of anything.
I see that it has been quite an old discussion, (2009), so the interest may well have waned.
I have done this rhythmic teeth clicking thing for as long as I remember. I do it involuntarily whilst counting objects - i.e. panels on a wall, power poles & marker pegs along the roadside, anything at all that forms a regular pattern. I find that my teeth clicks are light clicks, left, right, left, right side, all the time. Also, as I am doing this, I seem to be doing the same with my fingers - light touches, left, right, etc same side as the teeth, also doing the same thing with a slight rythmic curling of my toes!!
I generally do all these things together and in concert, all left, right, etc, together. No one else knows, or is aware, that I do this, just me.
Does anyone know if this is any sort of condition - if at all - it just may be that I simply just do it and that is all there is to it?

Yeah -------- now I'm much more aware of it & taking notice of what I'm doing all the time, I'm picking up how often I'm doing it. Like, I was riding my bike & keeping time with the pedal turns clicking side to side, or, listening to music last night & doing the whole lot together, (teeth clicks, fingers, toes), while also counting round the cupboard doors & back - constant!!!
Yes, "Mudboy", I'm almost dancing in this state, just imperceptible movements, though. |

| I cluck. Not so much as I used to. That's sort of a tongue against the roof of my mouth thing. My son grinds his teeth at night so badly at age 12 he already started to wear his back teeth down and he is scheduled to have stainless steel caps put on. It sounds like two bricks rubbing together. |
