Earlier this week I was doing some field work in a classroom of 16 pre-k students all around the age of four. The kids were excited to have a visitor in their classroom. While we were having reading time, a couple of the children decided I looked like a comfy stop to sit. So I had four of them leaning against me and I waited for my customary reaction (discomfort, rejection, and eventually withdrawal) to occur but it never did. Later on, while I was playing with the children one-on-one, I was able to make and maintain eye contact with them. Has anyone else ever noticed that eye contact and physical touch is easier with children than adults? What do you think explains this?

Yep.

I can make perfectly normal eye contact with my niece and nephew. I reckon it's because they aren't perceived as a threat to the amygdale like adults/older children are.

I'm a teacher. I am all about talking to kids. We're on the same wavelength. Once their parents walk in the door, that's another story... they love the small talk. I like the smaller talk.

I may be 18, but I never grew out of being 5. I feel like I have more in common with kids than adults. I don't always like being treated as being on the same level as adults either, it takes away from their story telling, which is what I llike most about people. I don't want a conversation unless it is either a deep conversation, or one about my obsessions, or one about your obsessions, or story telling.
