Is it possible to be addicted to milk? If not physically, then mentally? I drink 0.75-1.5 gallons everyday, which I know is bad for me(excess of anything is). So, I tried to cut back on my milk consumption, but then I started getting cravings.... similar to the cravings I get for nicotine. In fact, I found that I can even smoke a cig to help subdue the milk cravings... But I still find myself drinking almost as much milk as usual despite my efforts to stop. Sounds like an addiction to me, feels like an addiction, but it doesn't seem like it should be possible. Any input?

You are probably addicted to the vitamins inside the milk. When you are an AS you probably have a lack of Vitamin D. So if you would just take the vitamins in pills maybe your addiction go away. I used to eat a lot of cheese every day becuase my body needed Vitamin D. The human brain is really clever and if you are missing some vitamins your brain will get you hungry after food containing that kind of vitamin. 8)

It is perfectly posssible to be addicted to dairy, and wheat, etc.

Both casein in dairy, and gluten in wheat, contain food peptide opioids which, in people with certain, ( "leaky", as a result of chronic auto-immmune reactions to foods, candida infection, etc ), gut conditions, can pass directly to the brain. They can have a mild to strong euphoric effect, to which become addicted, but after years of "use" can become depression/alienation, etc. Short term effects can include brain-fog, spaced-outness, etc.

Experiments with rats have also found that the opioids suppress appetite-suppressants in the brain, causing one to eat far more than actually need.

And food intolerance can cause addiction to the very food(s) which are sensitive to. Eating them gives one a high/buzz, followed by a sort of hangover/withdrawal some hours later, which can be "cured" by eating that food again, like a hair of the dog.

I completely exclude gluten because of the effect it has on my mental health, and eat only small/infrequent amounts of dairy ( for similar reasons and also because it provokes production of catarhh, which is not fun in combination with smoking ). When I eat them, or have recently given them up, I experience cravings for both.

i drink 1.2 litres of milk per day.

ie 1x600 ml oak chocolate milk, and 1x600ml oak iced coffee flavoured milk.
it is an essential source of calories for me.
sometimes i am so absorbed by things that my stomach lining seems to shrivel (i guess) and i feel no hunger for the whole day.
milk adds 1000 calories to my daily diet in a very easy and quick way.

i still drink milk even when i am hungry and eat well because i like it.

I used to drink loads of milk as a kid and young teenager. It all started at primary school when the kids were given small bottles of milk to drink in the morning at breaktime. I found that milk had a calming effect and helped to relieve stress, and I loved the feeling of sucking the milk out of the bottle through a straw. AS and school gave me lots of stress as a kid.

Actually milk contains melatonin. Its the stuff that makes you become sleepy. So that is why it makes you calm.

Thats also why you dream when you eat cheese or drink milk right before you go to sleep.

I didn't know how many liters are in a gallon, so I googled it. In case you guys don't know either its 3.78541178.
So, now that I know that, I drink 2.83905883 to 5.67811767 liters of milk a day. Yeah, I think I have a problem. Why do I always find myself doing everything I enjoy in excess? I'm going to be lactose intolerant by the time I'm 30....

From what I've read during my time as a vegan, it is possible.

It's possible because mother milk contains a chemical (or something, sometimes my english sucks) that is very much similar to morphine.
It's in there so the baby will want to keep drinking the milk (so it doesn't end up starving itself and so it will be able to survive).

This is also why a lot of vegans have a very hard time giving up dairy products, as they've developed a dependency for it.

I have no idea if it has any effect on humans though, but perhaps it does (seeing lots of people get addicted to dairy).

I also spoke to a dr. who told me this...

But I suppose you could still remain skeptical about it as I have a hard time finding any articles on it.
And when I do, it's from vegan sites.

It's interesting that you thought that, ( about the gut etc ), because it reminded me that in early infancy/babyhood the gut walls are not yet completely "sealed"/protected, ( which is why it is so important to breastfeed for as long as possible etc ), which means that it is perfectly normal for a baby to have a "leaky gut", through which opioids would "naturally" pass, making milk even more desirable.

It would mean that wheat, ( containing gluten ), eaten in babyhood/before the gut barrier is fully in place, would have an opioid effect, on all babies. Dr. Karl Reichelt has been studying the possible effects of food opioids on the structure of the developing brain, and its impact on experience of the world in babyhood, ( and after ), and a person's use of their brain, etc. The gluten-eating West ( science, religion, culture incl. writing, etc ) certainly developed significantly differently to the rice-eating ( gluten-free ) Far East. 8)

It's impossible to be addicted to milk. In order for you to be experiencing addiction, two things have to have occurred:
1. You built up a tolerance for it, so that you have to consume increasingly larger quantities of it in order to get the same desired feeling.
2. You experienced withdrawal symptoms after quitting.

If you haven't experienced both of those things, then you simply have a milk habit.

Well then... according to your definition of addiction, I AM addicted. I find myself drinking more and more milk at a time in order to feel satisfied. It's gotten to the point now where I drink so much that I feel full and then a little more.

Drinking a glass of cold low fat milk is very refreshing in my opinion. The body likes it.

I used to drink at least a litre a day when I was living back in Ireland, but I can't drink it here in France because it doesn't taste the same
