This is a new special interest of mine and I was wondering if anyboidy else was into it too.

For those who don't know what I'm talking about, BJDs (ball jointed dolls) are "art and fashion" dolls that originated in Asia. They are highly customizable; you get to decide the kind of body, head, hair and eyes you want for your doll, though some assembly is required; especially the eyes and sometimes the hair depending on if you chose to buy a rooted or plain head. And since the dolls are jointed, you can pose them in a variety of different ways to photograph and "play" with.

The problem a lot of people have with these dolls is that some brands are highly expensive, the most notorious example being the Dollfies. However, there is a much cheaper, yet still high-quality brand called Obitsu, which I stumbled upon accidentally one day while surfing the web. Whereas the assembly of a Dollfie can cost hundreds of dollars, The assembly of an Obitsu costs less than a single hundred (based on my calculations).

There is a whole "subculture" (I don't know if you can call it that) of people who love BJDs, whether they are Dollfies, Obitsus or others. These people love to dress up and photograph their dolls, sometimes using a sequence of pictures and added captions to make "photo stories". Many people also give names to their dolls and create biographies for them. Some people, ("Wet users", I believe they're called?) even make an emotional investment and talk to their dolls as though they were real.

Well, that about covers the basics, I think. I'll add links for more info later. For now... Let the discussion begin! ^-^

krex is a Wrong Planet inhabitant who's an artist and she makes hand-made dolls (and much more)!

I guess you could enter 'krex' in the WP Search Field and look at her posts, with her website.
I never played with dolls but I can appreciate their beauty, just afraid to touch.

There is a classic French doll that is now almost priceless, like a museum piece, but I do not know the name. Some are made with human hair and precious lace.

You could customize an 'IdahoRose' BJD with matching clothes.

Hmm I'll have to look up this "krex"...

Wow that French doll sounds pretty cool. I had no idea a doll could ever reach museum-quality masterpiece status!

Hahaha, yeah, I guess I could make a BJD of myself. But I already have someone else in mind - My original character, Amelia. I think I would have more fun playing with her. Smile

Above is the website for krex, from Wrong Planet archives - she's so talented! Her dolls are featured.

I do like your doll's name, Amelia (& my 1st name is Amy).

Photo of French Bru Doll (usually with intricate dresses). Just read about the French Bru: From 1866-1899 by Societe Francaise de Fabrication de Bebis de and Jouets.

I firstly learnt of the French Bru, strangely enough (!), from "Interview With a Vampire" movie (author Anne Rice) where Claudia, the little girl vampire, collects French Bru Dolls.

Wow I didn't know that the French had their own line of little collectable dolls! That's pretty nifty. Oh, and thanks for the link to krex's etsy shop! I'll definitely check out her stuff.

Thanks! See, I was aiming to name her after my favorite fictional character, Abel Nightroad. Originally, her name was Abelia, since that is the feminine form of the name Abel. But my brother told me that Abelia was "weird, like an alien's name". So I just changed it to the not-as-weird name Amelia, and it really stuck with her character.
