I don't have any problem looking in the mirror when I am at home in the privacy of my bedroom or bathroom, but I hate to catch sight of myself in a mirror when I am out in public. I seem to look quite differnt then and feel very uncomfortable and very self-conscious. Perhaps it is because I am then seeing myself as the outside world sees me, but out in public I think I look weird and really out of place in relation to other people. When I am around other people I always avoid sitting near a mirror or anywhere where I can see my reflection. For me though, I think it is more of a self-esteem/self-image issue rather than just being part of my AS.

Reluctantly, because that amount of ugly hurts to see.

I don't have any problems with mirrors or my reflection in public places or anything of that nature.

Sometimes it sort of hypnotises me and I lose a lot of time, I think I have such warped self image I can't really imagine how I am if I dont see myself, and yet when I do see myself, it's somehow not really "me".

Because I am so out of touch with how I might look I do the the thing of looking at my reflection via another mirror.....yes, I think I'll stop writing now, I think this might not be normal.

I don't say "Candyman" though.

I look in my mirror when shaving, cutting my hair (can't deal with having other people cut it, so I cut it myself), and when inspecting my back for moles. Otherwise, no interest.

I have a really strange relationship with mirrors that my boyfriend finds amusing. He reckons that if there were no mirrors in the house, then I would be destitute and pretty much screwed.

I use the mirror for normal functions such as putting my hair up (which I do a lot), straightening my hair or on the very odd occasion when I put make up on (not something I do a great deal at all).

However, I find myself looking in it because, for some reason, I am fascinated by my own reflection. It's not because I'm narcissistic or big-headed or anything like that, because I don't actually know why I do it. There are times when I look in the mirror and think I look good, but then I usually feel good within myself at the same time. However there are also times when I look in the mirror and think that I look like crap, but then, again, I usually feel crap at the same time. Or there are even times when I look at my reflection and feel absolutely nothing. Like I say, my boyfriend finds it funny when he catches me looking at myself, he makes budgie noises and pretends to peck a small mirror when he catches me and then calls me 'budgie'.

I can't stand to look at myself in the mirror really. Never could. Can't stand having my picture taken or me being filmed. As a kid, I used to sometimes watch home movies. But I just can't stand watching myself anymore. Or more so, it's just being filmed that I can't stand. Something about that, it's like the camera is capturing a piece of me every time that I can't get back.

My partner Flakey calls me a canary.
(as in I stare back at myself in the mirror a lot...ooh look!...another me...)

I need mirrors and photographs and films...etc....in order to connect with myself.

It's really bad..I know....

I'm entranced with my own image, and at times have difficulty pulling my eyes off my image on reflective surfaces. It's borderline obsessive... Embarassed

But, I do the same with anyone/anything of which I find immaculately beautiful....

I've been told I resemble one of the following, on numerous occasions. An angel, an elf, a taltos, or fae.

I'm not really attractive in the typical sense, but nice to look at, all the same. I have few of the typical masculine traits assosiated with a man being handsome.

Well, where I come from, calling someone "fae" would be descriptive of a horror to dreadful to be named.

I look in the mirror as much as anyone else would - when I brush my teeth (to check for any food stuck in them) or when I casually walk past one somewhere I'll glance in it.

When I was a kid I used to look in them a lot more. I fascinated how my mental thoughts could be translated into body movements, I think because a lot of the time I had trouble believing that I was real and I had to check that I still had my physical body.

yes, i do. usually to criticize my own appearance and also to stare at my eyes. my eyes are the only ones i like to look at.
though i hate looking at pictures of me. they capture my appearance but none of the soul.

Wow, I found this just doing a random google search on Aspergers and Mirrors and found so many posts with such similiar reactions to mine that I wound up joining the community.
Yes myHusband also teases me about becoming mezmorized with my own reflection. And I have asked friends if its still Narssism if you not enamoured with how you look as much as just trying to process "Is that me?" "Is that really who I am?" I find it all so strange.
