I belong to the ”high at risk groups” (severe asthma) concerning swine flu. I think I’d be very likely to get seriously ill from it considering how much even the common cold messes up my breathing, not only during the cold itself but for weeks afterwards.
Now Pandemrix is here. I am very tempted to take it, but the rumours that squalene in the vaccine causes Guillain-Barre syndrome, and that other neurological diseases and eye diseases (I don’t even know which ones) can occur as well, terrify me. I’d rather die quickly in an artificial coma than become crippled for life. The last I saw was that it’s assumed that 1 of 100 000 that gets the jab will get Guillain-Barre.
I simply don’t know what to do.
Have anyone here taken the vaccine? Will anyone here take it? If you’ve taken it, how did it go?
If someone has gotten all the childhood vaccines without risk, does that mean they’ll be less likely to be sick from this vaccine? Is there any way to hazard an educated guess in advance as to who will be likely to develop complications?
Does anyone know any good sites that address these fears and preferably where one can enter questions? There are lots of sites, but they’re mostly either paranoid or very general.

No way in hell. I'm having a hard time figuring out why anyone would.
I've never had or wanted a flu shot in the past and see no reason to start now.
Especially this time, with all the short-cuts in the development, and the legal immunity.
Just when you thought the FDA couldn't sink any lower in their greed and corruption...

I work with kids, in a city where people think that magic water really works in disturbingly high proportions.
I'm on corticosteroids, AND I'm epileptic.
I had whooping cough a few years back and ever since, whenever I get a respiratory illness of any sort I cough like THAT again. Guilllane Barre is a risk I'm willing to take. |

I thought this was an interesting read.
I am worried about GBS also, and I wonder why this very serious side effect isn't in the news, unless it's because it's rare. There was a woman who I read about that lives near me that got GBS from this shot. I don't know where you live, but Squalene is illegal to use in the United States so the ones here aren't supposed to have this in it. I'm not sure I believe that 100%.

There are two options with Swine Flu. One is get a shot with who knows what is in it. Something the FDA cooked up and 99% likely to contain a strand of H1N1 in it as all vaccines include the virus. Other option is just to eat healthier and build up your immune system.
FDA is just trying to sell its crap to the people and as usual they are following the herd. There is crap in meat products injected into it and chemicals and synthetic crap in many foods you eat as well. |

Yes, it's very rare and you are 6-10 times as likely to get it from the flu, than from the shot.
I'm not in any risk group, so I'm letting those that need it go first. Never had a problem with a flu shot, nor do I know anyone who could demonstrate they did. |

Where have you seen this number?
The medical experts here go on TV and say that you're more likely to get GBS from the flu than from the vaccine, but it's the substance squalene that is under suspicion, not the virus itself. Can you tell me anything about this connection? Anything you know would be appreciated.

I suspect that stuff from wikipedia is 'chemicals that have been included in some vaccines at some time.' The American H1N1 vaccine contains no adjuvants, so no squalene, no aluminum, etc.
The vaccine used by my hospital comes in single-dose vials, so no thimerosol.
I had very little soreness in my deltoid for a few hours after the shot; the shot itself was very expertly administered by the employee health nurse (I looked away when she gave it, and had to take the fact that she was putting the needle, syringe, etc. away as evidence that she had actually given it to me - I didn't feel a thing. Nothing to do with the shot itself, though, just good injection technique).
No fever, sore throat, psychosis, worsening of my AS, etc in the 24+ hours since I got the shot. |

The American shot is without squalene and thimerosol, but Pandemrix that we use here in Norway, contains both substances. Pandemrix is delivered in vials of 10 doses. |

Just wanted to clarify - first, I'm still ok and never had any side-effects from the shot, and second that not *all* American shots are free of thimerosol, though all American shots are free of squalene. Multi-dose vials are available in the U.S, and these often (or always?) contain thimerosol to avoid bacterial contamination between injections.
Just to note, though, there is significantly more mercury in a can of tuna (and in a more dangerous form) than there is in any dose of vaccine. |

My CERT team worked an H1N1 vaccine clinic last week. We were offered the shot and I took it. No bad effects so far. These were also single-dose, so no thimerosal. I have never gotten the flu when I have gotten a flu shot. Three of the four times I failed to get one, I got the flu and ended up in the emergency room. No-brainer for me.

My father has taken the vaccine now (he's asthmatic, too) and he's fine. He didn't feel anything at all afterwards.
I think I have decided to take the vaccine now. Now that the virus has mutated twice, first to a strain that goes deeper into the lungs and second to become Tamiflu resistent (even though there has been very few cases) it seems like the best thing to do.
