Wow, it's a small world here. We were both 24, you were diagnosed in 1997 as I was and you were probably 12 also when diagnosed. _________________ I'm a Peach

Does this still apply to people who were diagnosed using a different criteria? I used the DISCO not the DSM. And if it does apply to me, then would my diagnosis instantly change to HFA or would I have to go through the diagnosis process again? _________________ ... Maybe he thought you were ugly |

Well, I get it, sort of kind of. I was concerned at the headline because I thought that the diagnosis of Aspergers would become ignored or unimportant in America once again, as it was before 1994. Instead though they are saying that the variabilty of diagnoses makes it difficult to treat the entire person, and that their aim is to form a diagnosis not for one piece but the whole puzzle. Since they are acknowledging that autism spectrum people are all really unique and one diagnosis does not necessarily apply to all, I agree, cautiously, that it seems a positive thing to want to look at a person and describe the whole picture, instead of putting someone in a box under a label.
Being self-diagnosed and wanting an official diagnosis, for no reason just to have it -- i've always worked but I've always been different and am finding it more and more difficult to blend, as it were, I was concerned that psychologists and others would poo-poo the whole AS thing, or call me something I was not, or attribute my problems to something completely irrelevant.
But they seem to want to simplify and group an entire designation, full of complications and disparities, under one huge tent, and that seems to be trying to bring a false sense of simplification to something that is not at all simple. _________________ Why should these curses be laid upon me

I like the label Asperger's due to the lack of the word "functioning".
You see, I find the terms low/high-functioning to be rather insulting.
Every part of my brain works. Some parts are not as developed as the average, while others are more developed. However, every part functions. That makes me fully-functioning.
Now, merging Asperger's in as just a "spectrum" diagnosis would be an oversimplification.
I've met other aspies and I've met people with HFA. While there's significant amount of individual variation, I found HFA to be different.
Due to the broad variation, a diagnosis of "autism" could be extremely misleading.

...What? A question like that deserves a flippant response. |
Yup. And an avatar looking like a complete smug git.
Personally, I'm not bothered by the issue. I hope it sorts out all those people who are misdiagnosed with AS. |

Here's an op-ed from Baron-Cohen on the removal of AS from psychiatry manual:

He feels like more research should be done. _________________ Why should these curses be laid upon me
