I'm constantly laughing at inappropriate times e.g. when listening in on other peoples conversations, whilst someone is trying to argue their point to me, when someone talks negatively about me, when someone makes a mistake, etc.
I'm not amused in any of the situations, I just laugh when I'm nervous or not sure what to say - and when someone notices I'm laughing at something stupid it makes me laugh even more.
Does anyone have any tips on how to avoid laughing so much? |

I wish I did. My family is *still* angry at me for laughing at my great-grandmother's funeral twenty years ago.

I wish I knew, I have had several incidents where I have laughed at times when I was supposed to look serious or apologetic.
I also wish that when I did laugh, I could control the volume. The number of times my mother asked me if I had to laugh so loudly. |

If I only knew how to stop that inappropriate laugh.
I can only tell you that It gets better as you get older. I still do it but it lasts less than before, when I was a kid. |

When I was about 10 years old I did something that made an older kid angry, and I don't remember doing it. When he chased me, I couldn't run fast because I could not resist the urge to laugh uncontrollably. When he caught me, he held me down and was going to punch me, but he didn't because he was so weirded out by my inappropriate response. He was a fat kid, too, and to make things worse, I told him "Oh, no I'm going to get sat on!". No sir, he didn't like it! Later, some other adults told my mom that I'm autistic.

If someone figures that out, could you please write a book about it?
I laugh when uncomfortable and when in extreme pain. People at hospitals do not take you seriously when you're belly laughing and don't have the words to explain the level of pain you are in. It's really, really annoying.

I have that problem too, but it's usually caused by my mind wandering and then thinking of something funny. So funny that I have to laugh at it.
This is the first time I've heard of somebody laughing when they're nervous. |

I don't know if nervous is the right word for it, but I've laughed every time I've come close to death or thought I came close to death. For example, someone who was a very reckless driver gave me a ride on his motorcycle and I laughed the whole time. He thought I was having fun but really I thought we were going to die any moment.
Another time, I was walking across a long railroad trestle when a train came. I could see that there wasn't enough time to get off the trestle so I hung underneath like a jungle gym while the train went overhead. Stuff kept falling down on me and he whole trestle shook really hard. When the train was gone, my arms were too tired to pull myself back up so I had to swing my body until I got enough momentum to get back on top of the trestle and then I walked to the end and onto solid ground again. Then I started laughing so hard I fell down and couldn't get up or walk anywhere for a while until I stopped laughing.

This happens to me as well.
Once in primary school, my friend said that she reckons I fancy this boy who was in our class (and it was true), and I denied it, but I accidentally laughed cos I used to have this thing where I would always laugh whenever I told a lie (that's why I have always tried to avoid lying). So she was like, "You're laughing, it's true!" so I had to suddenly think of some convincing reason why I laughed, so I said that I randomly thought of something funny that happened once. So then she asked what happened, so I panicked and thought, "Quick, what has happened that's funny??!!" I managed to think of something in the end, and she believed this rather bad lie.

Ugh, if I had a nickel for every time I've ran into this problem! Like Min27 said, my mind tends to wander off and think of something that's totally unrelated to the current situation, that I forget what's going on around me. So when I think of something funny, I just tend to laugh without thinking about it.

Yeah, laughing about stuff I randomly think about is a problem too - especially if it happens at the same time as something I'm not supposed to find funny
I'm a little disapointed nobody has any solutions, but it's good to know I'm not alone with this problem. |

I have that problem, as well. I'm always thinking about something funny, or something that I think is funny, though it isn't.

I'm always laughing at stupid times. Usually when listening to other's conversations that I'm not apart of. The other day in psychology we were doing work on theory of mind and baron cohen on the computers and had to take a multi choice quiz on some site, and one question was "Which of these is a fact about AS?" the first option was "it's named after hans syndrome" I for some reason found that hilarious and couldn't stop giggling. These boys sitting next to me were watching a video on the computers, and there was a sound of someone making weird noises and then I laughed really loud and the boy looked at me. So all lesson I was giggling randomly about the sound on the video and the option on the multi choice quiz.
Sometimes I remember a conversation from earlier and I randomly laugh in lessons and stuff and sometimes when telling someone something serious or morbid I start smirking and giggling even if it's not funny at all, I can't keep a straight face.

This reminds me of an episode I had during one of my engineering classes. The professor was deriving some equations for analyzing certain force systems when he came to a point where the equation was of the same form as a derivative at a point but without the limit. He wanted us to realize that we should take the limit as delta-x goes to zero. So he started saying, "There's something you want to do to this equation, I know it. You should just have the urge to scream it out and give this equation what it wants. It wants you to do something to it. Tell me what you want so badly to do to this equation." I, since I'm apparently 12 years old, immediately doubled over in laughter and tried to stifle my giggling for a good 5 minutes before I realized I couldn't stop no matter how hard I tried and had to excuse myself. I went to the bathroom and splash cold water on my face. Then, I sat down in the lobby dealie in the engineering building and chuckled to myself for a at least 15 minutes before I calmed down enough to go back into class.
Now everyone thinks I'm on drugs
