Hoi, welkom hier.

I saw that you found the Dutch-language topic already, could be useful for specific Dutch questions.

It would be nice if you could get into the scientific work again. Scientific work was one of my goals, but I 'ended' up in IT. Did you consider to get a job in a company? It can be really structured and has also some financial benefits.

Guten tag Scientist,

Thank you for sharing and your introduction lit up the realization that I have yet to add my own on here. So, now I will respond to your intro with quote and then response.

Scientist wrote:

I could tell you my real name, but that is not very informative and my username describes me better.

So true and while I will at times include my first name given by my parents, my handle does reflect far more to me than my legal name (of course).

Scientist wrote:

I was born and raised in Sittard, in the South of the Netherlands. I've always known I'm a bit different compared to most other people. At school and in private life I never really had problems, but I am different in social interactions (I am the passive type) and I have always been a quiet person and a bit shy (though I can, once I know someone better, also talk much and in some situations I can do or say things of which others say they wouldn't dare). I've always had friends but not too many and I've also had relationships, without major problems.

In my case I noticed vast differences between myself and others.
Regardless of the differences between "a bit and "vastly," I emphatically understand what you mean without a doubt.
It's nice to hear you had friends, as for me it was very difficult; I never understood why it was so rather impossible to feel to align closely enough with others.

Scientist wrote:

After I left High School (A level), I went to do Culture and Science Studies at Maastricht University at first, but I quit after two years (I thought it was interesting but too narrative for me, and during these studies I found out psychology is my main interest) and went to live on my own. After that I studied Psychology at the University of Nijmegen and lived in Nijmegen. I graduated (MSc) in Experimental Psychology (a program on sensory information processing and motor control).

I'm 33 and it was only 6 months ago that I found my true passion for a lack of a better word at the moment, was that dwelling in psychology. I envy you in that respect! It's a rare thing to hear a tale of another and feel this sensation. Nothing negative in case that is somehow read into the use of envy.
While I am not familiar the program on sensory information and processing and motor control, it sounds like I get the gist. Perhaps I shall research it a bit to understand more.

Scientist wrote:

After my Master's I worked as a research fellow doing scientific research at the University of Nijmegen. Then I moved to Vlaardingen, near Rotterdam, and I started doing a PhD project (which in the Netherlands is a job) at Erasmus University Rotterdam. After two years my supervisor became a professor at VU University in Amsterdam and our research group moved there. I commuted between Vlaardingen (Rotterdam) and Amsterdam.

I was in my last year of my PhD when I became ill, I got a psychosis and a severe depression, from too much stress. Therefore I spent 7 months in psychiatry ward in the hospital in Sittard, in the South of the Netherlands, and after that I lived with my parents for a while.

From a purely selfish side, I'm pleased to see you reached the top side of an even chanced experience. Even more, that I find value in nearly all experiences: good, bad, neutral or not applicable.
Perhaps if we get along, you will permit me to question you here and there on this topic.
On the remaining sides, it's still pleasing to hear such a tale coming out without limb astray or worse.

Scientist wrote:

Since a few months now I'm happy to live on my own again, in my flat in Sittard close to my family. I'm still in outpatient treatment (have medication, therapies and psychology and psychiatry counseling, I am btw very happy about my treatment and clinicians) and I'm happy now that I'm doing fine, treatment will be ended, the antipsychotic has been ended and if my condition will stay as good as it is now, the antidepressive will also be ended in a few months, and we will now try to see whether I can work again, in this area where I live now. I would love to do scientific research in my field again.

All that comes to mind is wow, that sounds like a horrendous ordeal. It's refreshing to hear love to describe their desire to do their scientific research.

Scientist wrote:

During the time I was in the hospital I've been examined psychologically and neuro-psychologically and about a year ago they diagnosed Autism Spectrum Disorder. I also wanted to know which form of autism I had and they also examined that and since a few weeks now I know that it is Asperger's Syndrome. It does explain things. I've read some books about it and I like recognising myself there.

"Knowing is half the battle!"
That's an old cheesy endline from a cartoon called GI JOE from the 80's after a short scenario that held some moral teaching played.

Scientist wrote:

I would like to meet other people who also have autism, who may be a bit like me, that's why I registered here at WrongPlanet. I've been reading around a bit and I think I like the atmosphere here.

My interests: science, experimental psychology, psychophysics and music (listening and playing (guitar))

My favourite book: Quirkology, the curious science of everyday lives, by Richard Wiseman

Your title caught my mind and I am very interested in picking the mind of another who enjoys psychology.
Hmm. I lack the energy to try and list off enough to give you enough of a feel overall.
However here are some of my psyche-related interests:
Psychology
Evolutionary Psychology
Addiction (what it is - how to treat it - etc)
Psychedelic-assisted Psychotherapy
Entactogen-assisted Psychotherapy
Pattern seeking
Psycho-spiritual development (no metaphysics)

That's all for the moment!

Be well,

Thanks for all your nice replies and welcomes! Smile

As you may have noticed, I've added visual arts to my list of interests, since that also has my interest. Not that I produce visual art myself, but I enjoy visiting visual art museums and looking into art books.

Yeah, useful, and fun, I think. But there's nothing happening there at the moment, not since I posted there. But maybe I'm being impatient Wink I'm also on a Dutch autism network (AutSider) for specific Dutch questions and Dutch contacts.

Well I haven't finished my PhD yet, because I got ill, but last Tuesday my PhD supervisor told me I have enough publications for my thesis! So I will soon start writing the introduction and conclusion for my thesis and then I can get my PhD! Smile

I'm thinking and talking to people about what to do after finishing my PhD. I could go for a Postdoc position at a university, which seems very attractive to me, since I really like hardcore science Smile. Another option may be working at CBS (Central Bureau of Statistics), I've spoken to a few people who work(ed) there, one was very positive, the other one wasn't (and left). In fact I can't imagine what it's like working in a company, since I've only been working at universities so far, and I've always liked it. Occasionally I've thought about IT as well. But at the moment my main interest is in hardcore science.

OK, cool (and better late then never find your true passion, I think).

OK, and you may ask me any questions you may have on the program I did.

You may question me.

OK, cool (looked up Forensic Anthropology and Paleoanthropology, never heard these terms before, only heard of Anthropology). Are you researching old bones? Do you work at a university? Or are you still only taking classes and studying from books?
lithium73 wrote:

Well, the discipline of my PhD project is Psychophysics, which is "a discipline within psychology that investigates the relationship between physical stimuli and their subjective correlates, or percepts. Psychophysics has been described variously as “the scientific study of the relation between stimulus and sensation” or, more completely, as “the analysis of perceptual processes by studying the effect on a subject’s experience or behaviour of systematically varying the properties of a stimulus along one or more physical dimensions." (as you can read at Wikipedia, and there's a lot more on the topic there, if you like to know more). The topic of my PhD project is visual and haptic (/tactile) search. I have three publications, done three experiments. I implemented search experiments, had subjects performing these visual and haptic search tasks, and analysed their (hand/arm) movements, and from that we learned about fundamental perceptual and motor processes. (I will stop here, because I could go on forever on the topic... but if you wish to know more, just ask, I'll be pleased to explain).
Oh, and I wanted to say I like your Avatar, but that's not you, is it? (I saw a picture of the upper half of your face on the picture thread, if I remember correctly) Who is it then?

Yes, pretend it's Brad Pitt, if it helps!? Assume your photo is you, too? Cool

It is a bit quiet in the topic, when there is a question there are answers, but mostly it is quiet. Sometimes I look on AutSider too, but I feel WP is more suited to my personality and circumstances.

Great, and it can be a nice way to get into working again, since you can vary the hours.

I liked the university as well, but I could not find a position at that time. After a few other things I ended up in an IT company, at first I was afraid I would not fit in. But the structure is okay and I get to follow a lot of courses, something I really like. CBS is a bit difficult to say for me. But you have some time left to make a choice.

Good luck with your thesis and finding a new future.

Well, I just always like to know who is behind a post. So I like it when people show their real face. And Brad Pitt doesn't impress me, to be honest. My avatar is me indeed. I like to show my face so people know what I look like.

Brad might, for all I know, be a nice guy; I've never met him - have you? Presumably, even those girls that do have him or some other star on their wall, doesn't mean they'd really like them, in real life? Cool

That's true, he might be nice, I don't know him. But I'm not impressed by his looks, that is what it was all about...Wink
