This came up with my therapist a couple weeks ago. He told me of all his adult Asperger's clients, I was the only one who actually drives. So I was wondering, how many other people on here drive or not...

I drive. When I first started, I got into a number of fender-benders - mostly due to inattentive driving. I think that's because I was just paying attention to the wrong thing at the wrong time. Over the years, I've learned what to pay attention to in pretty much every common driving situation, so I haven't had an accident in over 20 years.
As it is, I'm a much better driver when I'm the only one in the car. If I have a passenger, they tend to distract me.

| I've driven since 16 without incident, except for one accident several years ago that was totally my fault where I ran a stop sign while also filling out a FEDEX form, listening to the radio loud and trying to finish a cookie. Crash! |

Yeah I love to drive. I actually hate arriving anywhere as I wish I could just stay in my car with the music on and keep going. To where, I don't know or care, just as long as the road continues. I am seemingly obsessed with some idea in my head of an open space, and an endless road. It's something I really dream about. I'm a good driver also, and I've been driving for years, but was not always as careful. Now I seem to anticipate things and my reactions are pretty darn fast. I get impatient in traffic though. It snarls up my idea of what a road is or should be for me.

I've had a few accidents as well, most of them not my fault, except for two. And one was due to weather and the other was due to my right rear brake seizing up on me coming around a corner. I used to deliver pizza. Do you prefer manual or automatic?? I myself prefer manual, as it's more fun...

| I drive. But I prefer not to. Predicting what other vehicles will do, and keeping the sensory distractions to a minimum, are both quite difficult. Even though I got my license around age 17, I've only had a care for 8 years since then (I'm 40+). Even now, I drive at most 100 miles per month (and have had to recharge my battery many times as a result). I hope to move to a community that does not require driving. |

| I have been driving cars since I was 17 and have had a CDL since about 30. I got into accidents when I was in my early 20s but I have not had an incident in over 10 years (the last one being when the back wheel of my car came off and went airborne). |

I feel the same way, this is one of the reasons I've wanted to go to the desert for so many years. The images I've seen in the past of a 2 lane road going perfectly straight beyond the horizon is something I've wanted to see from behind my windshield since before I got my license. One of these days when I have some money, it's gonna happen. |

I do drive, but it's always a bit frightening for me. I don't drive out of my comfort zone. I'm fine in rural areas, but there's nothing like that around here. I drove on freeways when I lived in upstate New York, where there was one freeway, and it was three lanes wide with no cars on it. Here, the freeways are god-knows-how-many lanes wide, and there are cars driving along side you at all times, and on-ramps and exits everywhere. People merging into your lane from both sides without looking, and nobody leaving space between cars. I can't deal with that.
I'm not surprised that you drive, and prefer a manual transmission. You seem like a "car" kind of guy. Maybe something to do with your avatar.  |

Yeah, that was the car I had before my Honda Civic. Mazdaspeed Protege3... actually called the MP3 edition as it came with an MP3 player... That was a fun ride...

I see this topic alot... I see no reason as to why aspies can't drive... there's nothing that could affect our ability to do so..
I drive all the time.

I could probably drive if I wanted to, but I don't want the responsibility that comes with it.
If you drive a car, you are responsible for the lives of other people and I don't want a person's death on my conscience.

I'm 19, I don't drive any more. I had too many overloads where I would go unresponsive and almost cause crashes.
