We had a couple of groups meeting in Brisbane for a while, kind of through the local support group.

It ended up being we had one lot who would prefer to always meet in the same spot, same time, same day (iykwim);

Then the others who would prefer variety and not so fussed.

But it can be done.

Hi MattD, I can meet you anytime if you are interested.
You, me and Quatermass are all on the Gold Coast.

I have also taken a long break from 'social situations'
but I am feeling a lot more engaging, these days.

It would be nice if you, me and Quatermass could all get together,
but Quatermass would probably only want to meet in 'one on one' occasions.

Why don't you send him a pm about a 'Conference of Aspies' ?

I always notice Aussie Aspy's, and especially Gold Coaster's,
and I meant to pm you a long time ago, but I didn't get around to it... Embarassed Sad

Well, pm me if you are interested.

Hi.

I've been coming onto this site for a few months. I haven't really actually 'met' or communicated significantly with anyone else here and sort of have a desire to.

To be honest, after reading all the posts I'm a little confused/overwhelmed, but that's because talk of socialising with so many people does that.

However, I thought i'd better post because I live around Byron Bay area (far north NSW) and if there's a chance there's others on my wavelength nearby (or, reasonably so) then heck that's a curiosity worth posting for. Cool

hey, I'm another Brisbane-based aspie. I also like destinations close to train stations. But I doubt I'd meet up in the near future at least. I just couldn't resist posting here only because I have the location in common, that's all. It's comforting to know of some WPers nearby. I hope you guys can work something out and it goes well.

hi all,

on Wednesday the 30th of December syzygyish and i met at the Southport Library on the Gold Coast... as a good start to the meet it turned out that neither of us was an axe-murderer Shocked... and, as well as that, mysassyself and i met yesterday, 31st of December, in Kingscliff... again, in meeting we were both relieved (i am sure) that neither party had homicidal intentions. Very Happy

"two meetings in two days?" you ask, yes... indeed! there was also the opportunity to meet millie via mysassyself, but by the end of the meet with mysassyself i was at the point of being over-socialised and showing it i am afraid. shaking Embarassed

syzygyish and mysassyself, i am sorry if i weirded you out... my aspie traits are quite prominent in a new person scenario and more-so (i find) with two meets in two days (!). as i think i explained, if i am in a technically-focused (work) environment i am fine... outside of that i can (and did) struggle a bit Embarassed . i wish i knew how my mind worked.

at each meet we talked about a number of things; comparing notes on our aspie traits, family reaction to diagnosis, and interests... syzygyish wowed me by rattling off (oh-so casually) the Latin names of the plants, trees, and shrubs in the Southport Library carpark/gardens, and mysassyself provided interesting insight into what it is to be a female with AS and shared the direction that she is taking academically thumleft

i must say that meeting with anyone new is quite daunting though, as anxious as i was, i am of the mind that it was a positive experience.

thank you both cheers, i hope that you feel that catching-up was a positive experience also.

should the opportunity present, i would like to meet more WP'ers.

Smile

although, when I turned up at the (closed, totally deserted) meeting place I did think there was good opportunity present (the meeting place was suggested by him, not me).

It was fine. Apart from the fact it was fine, you don't appear to have noticed anything odd about me - cyclops perhaps I'm cured Shocked cheers

Exactly. I'm of the mind that if there's ever more than two of us someone ought to bring scrabble. I like pictionary, too.
I'm sorry if I rather rushed your second visit, tektek, by suggesting it on the day I did.
I find most new experiences 'shocking' and generally feel weird and nonsensical throughout, sometimes going quiet when tired.
But, they're all like that, may as well practice 'em. Very Happy

as silly as it sounds, i thought the library would have been open on NYE day, which was a bit doh on my behalf (in hindsight).

it seemed like (and was) a logical, easy to find place as (as it turned out) you and i don't really know Kingscliff... and we agreed to the location via PM in the lead-up to the event thumleft... the library was closed but there were people coming and going to return books, iirc you even assisted a lady with her return while i sat there kind of useless (read: while i sat there like a pillock). after an hour we did end up sat at a bench at the Kingscliff Shopping centre, by a main entrance, after both purchasing a cold drink at the Woolworths... it was very busy! Shocked lol

ah, no... i was just trying (and failing) to keep my stammering to a minimum and to reign in my monologues. you seemed to be coping relatively well, or at least you seemed OK externally... i didn't notice any particularly outstanding oddness or prominent aspie traits. i do not recall scratch (?)... and good for you Very Happy, you were doing better than i was!

it's not a problem, i was a little over socialised (two meetings in two days! Shocked lol) and i kind of jumped at the opportunity to high-tail it out of there when you asked if i had to be somewhere. Embarassed, lol at myself. in saying that, for future reference, i have a tendency to agree with your idea RE bringing along a board game... something to focus on and to help conversation flow more naturally (maybe, Razz)... i have the artistic flair of a septuagenarian baboon with tennis elbow, so maybe not pictionary for me, unless those playing have a good eye for the abstract. lol

it was nice to meet both you and syzygyish... in my opinion it's good to see the real-life individuals with which you have been interacting on WP! Very Happy

thanks again cheers

I had not thought about the library being closed, either.

hi people.
wow - nice to read through this thread.
I'd be interested in meeting up some other time.

tektek - the invite was there to come when mysassyself dropped by. But i MORE than understand when an aspie gets "peopled out" as I call it. We have to pace ourselves. I know I do. too much and i go into brain freeze and monologuing, and then I collaspe with migraines. LOL. true.

anyway, if there is a group meetup at some stage, let me know. theoretcially I would make the effort. But I also know I am a notorious canceller. But for an aspie meetup that may be different.

hi, millie

thanks for understanding my not catching up with you on the day, as i wrote above... i was reaching the point of being over-socialised. there is no doubt that high anxiety in an individual can encourage sympathetic response in others; it would not be good if we were all suffering as a result! Shocked hehe

even with this in mind, i would like to say that i am interested in meeting WP'ers and look forward to the opportunity to do so. Very Happy

one of the best things about communicating with others on the spectrum is that there is a shared understanding of the low threshold in relation to socialising. My life is littered with examples of how offensive my behaviour is for never turning up or never wanting to be a part of group things or never wanting to attend parties or celebrations. It's been very good to meet others with ASD's who are similar. I find it refreshing, understandable, honest and A COMPLETER RELIEF!

I have never really understood when people get offended by others for not wanting to do something "social". I've always been relieved when I see this tendency in others.

look forward to a meet-up at some point. Smile

There is an Asperger's Day in Brisbane on February 27 I think? it is being run by Asperger Services Australia. (ASA.)

When I get full details I shall post them up here on the thread. (time and place.)
I am going. It's a definite. Smile

Hope to see others there.
