My psychologist mentioned that some people with AS can't carry a conversation and eat at the same time. That made me laugh. I never finish my meals if people are talking. I forget to eat if I'm focusing on talking. Just didn't realize this was an AS thing, I just thought it was me (again). Anyone else forget the food if you're talking? Or maybe you're just completely quiet when you eat?

I always thought my simultaneous capacity was good. It's not. I never do several things at once, I just flop between them, lose focus and forget what I was doing. Maybe I'm a bit ADD too, or is that covered by AS as well?

Tangent again. This is how my conversations go to mind you. I'm always going on tangents, associating too much...

I can't talk and eat at the same time either. If I am required to talk, I will stop eating and carry on again once I'm finished. I cannot abide people who eat and talk at the same time anyway, because if their mouth is really full of food, I can't understand what they are saying, plus it doesn't look nice.

I usually just eat my food quickly and then try to join in with the conversation. For some reason I always get annoyed by conversations while I'm eating. I like to drift off into my own world. Oh, reading that has made me extremely hungry.

I enjoy table talk, dinner conversation. It's fun to share a meal and discuss the events of the day. Breakfast is another story. I'm not too chatty in the morning and don't like to have my peace of mind ripped away by the TV or other people. If someone tries to start up a conversation with me first thing in the morning before or while I'm having my coffee I brush them off and escape to somewhere private.

I can't eat and talk at the same time. I have to choose. I can't even walk and talk at the same time. Kind of. If I try to have a conversation with someone while I'm walking, I can't pay attention to where I'm going, and I fall sometimes. If I'm talking to someone else, I have to give them my attention to carry on the conversation.

I really don't like it when people talk with their mouths full...it's disgusting.

And...it annoys me when people make gross sounds while eating.

I can't really eat and talk at the same time so what i normally do is eat my food first then join in a conversation.

I didn't mean talking while your mouth is full, but I mean I can't eat as long as I'm involved in conversation. Normally people will eat and listen and then talk. I listen and talk, or I eat and don't. Since I like talking over a table I often don't eat until other people stop talking and I have nothing to add myself. I'm often the last one to finish.

Did I over-explain?

I find that it's very hard for me to eat and talk at the same time. I can only do one thing at a time, and I have to ask people to let me eat my meal, before they start to talk to me.

I cannot eat and talk at the same time........and I cannot have others eating and talking around me. Eating requires thought and concentration for me and I am easily put off.......I cannot have musc while eating or have the TV at normal volume. Things must be still and quiet for me to eat. But not too quiet so as to hear others masticating their food. That also really puts me off!

I have unfortunately at times removed myself from the table whilst eating with my family due to the fact that sometimes my son and partner find dinner time an excellent opportunity to air their grievances. :x

I also take the phone out of the wall when eating.

I get what you mean.

Sometimes I get so wrapped up in table talk that my meal is still untouched and getting cold while the other person's just finished theirs.

I can't eat and talk at the same time either. I always figured that it was due to my inability to multitask. I can't talk and walk, talk and drive or do any two activities at the same time. LOL! When I do an activity, my full attention is on that, and only that activity.

I find people who talk while eating repulsive. I just eat my meal then talk. And to those that talk while food is in their mouth I will go to my room until they stop eating.

I don't get anything done while talking. I'm not sure if I can't, I just don't. While with some effort I could probably do most things while talking, I wonder how you're supposed to talk and be eating at the same time.
