Good thing you didn't mention the USA, or right now they'd be busy invading you, grabbing whatever oil you've got handy, locking you up in an illegal prison-camp, and proclaiming how grateful you are to be liberated.

The US has many, MANY faults, but we are competant enough in military matters of the past(kindly disregard Vietnam and Iraq: The Revenge). It was a lot of luck that resulted in our military past not being complete sh**, but it is still solid. As for militaries; why it has everything to do with sports. Wars require strength, strategy, and solid training as well as a scouted enemy. Military campaigns require strength, stategy, solid training, and a well scouted enemy. The only difference is the lack of killing, and I've seen some soccer players that would have you think they were being killed(along with the Colombian incident).

Hilarious! Although every team acts like that on the field in an attempt to get yellows. Theres no way you get THAT hurt all the time.

There was a shirt that we used to wear back in high school, it went something like:

"Some people think that soccer is a matter of life and death. I don´t like this attitude, I can assure you its MUCH more serious than that."

Wow. What a way to end a career. I wish I could think of something else to say, but that was indescribably stupid. Wow.

Anywhere off the field, Zidane's behavior could have gotten him arrested for assault and it wouldn't matter what the verbal "provocation" was. That was just disgraceful behavior.

And then they gave *Zidane* the Golden Cup award? That was totally bogus. He should have been banned from it. Cannavaro was SO good in his defense work, he really deserved the award. Still - at least *he's* still a real sportsman. His comment was "I've got my award right here." (in reference to the team's World Cup)

Italy played well and really deserve their win.

I was thinking about the team I wanted to see win, if there was any. I always root for the underdog, which eliminates the big 6(England, Brazil, Argentina, Italy, France, Germany). I also appreciate good teams, which eliminates a significant amount of other teams. Finally, I appreciate consistant, hard work. In most other sports this would leave me with 8-10 teams which I could root for. My teams left were Ecuador, Ghana, and Australia. All the others I had some problem with.

Postscript-Zidane was apparently called a terrorist. He then somehow came up empty searching for some Italian stereotype to retaliate with, so he headbutted the guy. Now that's thinking on your feet!

A few other differences between war and sport:

Sport isn't played against an enemy, it's played against an opponent. The difference being that you can at least recognise and respect the objectives of an opponent as being the same as your own.

You have to win at sport in your own right, not use your economic power to coerce and intimidate other teams into backing you against a smaller, lone opponent.

When you get a red card in soccer, you can't simply declare the referee "irrelevant" and continue playing.

...Well there are but a few. But hey, I'm not anti-US, there's a lot of good people there who are at least vaguely pissed off about being misled into the last war. Not like Oz where we just take our PM's advice and just get over it. Evil or Very Mad
