and do you see the same things in siblings in your family. I had to take speech therapy in school up to the 5th grade. Some women took me out of my regular class and I had to get up and walk with her in the middle of class. I used to be kinda embarrased anyways..... I get to the room and it's like 7-8 other kids in there sitting in a big round table and we practice pronouncing words. I use to have trouble with the number 12 and R's and W's like for example "right and write". Now back to today. My brother has a son and I think he's autistic also and he's having trouble talking it's like he'll repeat what you say but he doesn't come up with things to say on his own like a NT child does. He doesn't ask any questions or say that he wants something for example. He's 3 1/2 years old.

As an adult, I'm considering speech therapy. So no, I didn't go through speech therapy but am thinking of doing it.

No but I was also not diagnosed until I was an adult. My teachers and parents made were very aware in my odd manner of speaking. I think the teachers left it up to my parents in strengthing these skills. Both my parents never really took the time and thought I'd eventually outgrow it.
I use to have to stay after school in language just to get extra help in grammar and writing. I don't believe anyone in my family had to take speech either. But I did have a lot of family members who had difficulties in school especially in language and speech. I do however have a nephew who is taking speech but mainly because he has a strange condition called polymicrogyria. His main issue isn't the use of language itself but rather his poor motor skills.

It's the say that my speech organs are formed, and especially my soft and hard palattes and sinuses. I'm quite proud of it.

Yes and a lot of tests to see if I was deaf or just ignorant.
I remember going for a hearing test and a really snobby doctor saying to me at the end: "He's got fine hearing, he's just ignorant". Of course back then they didn't know I had Asperger Syndrome but it makes me feel VERY angry looking back on how horrible he was to me and how they didn't come to the right conclusion (Asperger's) for around 10 years

for years, even before i knew anything about asperger's, whenever i meet people, about 80% of them feel like they have to make some kind of comment about the way i talk. some of them say i talk with an "accent." when i ask what kind of accent, some of them can't even explain (wtf). lots and lots of people have told me i talk kind of slow. i don't get the slow comments anymore, hopefully because my speech has somewhat improved. i've been practicing speeding my speech up by repeating things i hear on tv or playing my voice back and saying things and playing them back until i am satisfied that i talk at a fairly "acceptable" speed.
before i knew i had asperger's, i would not be able to hide my irritation at people's comments about my speech. it still irritates me now, but not as much because figuring out that i've had asperger's helped me a lot in accepting certain things about me that will always be seen as different, or odd.

I always get told I'm very posh. And monotonous.

When I first started school this was one of the things that they first said to my mum. They would always comment on how much of a good vocabulary I had and how "proper" I talked. Apparently quite advanced for my age, but the other kids would always laugh and say that I sounded weird. The latter continued all throughout school.
I didn't have speech therapy. I had no need for it. As I've gotten older it's become less of a difference but people still make the occassional comment about me sounding really smart and/or posh. I'm not sure now if it's because of the way I say my words or the words that I use.

I never did, but I'd like to as an adult. The only problem is that I have no idea where adults can go. I think I have some problems with HOW I talk (tone, modulation, etc.)
As far as speaking better than my peers, I think that's true of me. I definitely sound whatever the American equivalent of posh is. |
