I am an adult self diagnosed Aspergers and finding more and more things that make me sure of this every day. This is a big one.
Is nose picking a sign that someone would have Aspergers?

I pick my nose andeat the buggers obsessively. I can not stop. If I could it would make my life so much better. I realize that it is really gross and I am so ashamed. I have an appointment with a therapist soon, but I do not think I will be able to tell her this.

Does anyone have any experience with this or how to stop it?

I think you should carry a little packet of tissues and clean your nose regularly so you will not be tempted to pick it in public. Apologies if you've tried this.

Nose-picking doesn't have too much to do with AS. It can be a problem for anyone. But in the cases where it becomes obsessive, it can probably be treated a lot like trichotillomania (habitually pulling out one's hair) would be.

I picked my nose from the dozens of styles available.

No this is not a sign of Asperger's. It is a sign of something far worse.

Just be honest and open with your therapist. Are you seeing a specialist in olfactory gastronomy? Only they can give you the correct diagnosis, and select an appropriate treatment. Glueing your hands to your legs is a common one.

Friend of mine definitely not AS was big nose picker- bogey on finger examiner. He did it to test reaction of others to sudden social situation. Was in Army, and could do stuff like this, in fact did stuff like this as part of job. Dead now.

Most people pick their nose, they just don't do it in public.
Carry tissues with you when you go out and blow your nose before you leave the house so you are less likely to pick it.

I can relate to you, myfakename. I just don't want to post any details (it is bad). I've learned in late elementary school not to do it in public -- hopefully you know this, too! Not even my therapist knows that I pick my nose.

EDIT: Yes, Jingo8 (in the post below). I concur 1,000% Tissues absolutely do not cut it!

I've always done this, tisues or hankerchiefs just don't cut it. I hate the feeling on stuff in my nose.

I'm socially aware enough to try to hide it or wait until i'm probably not being watched. I'm not socially inhibited enough to absolutely not do it no matter what becuase it would be a "bad thing", so i sometimes get seen but shrug it off.

I picked my nose all the time as a kid and still do it. I just don't do it out in public much.

Oh, you at the Psych Forums?

I have read of links between the two...so I'd say the notion is not completely unheard of.

I used to have an embarrassing rap about it that I threatened (to myself) to record under an assumed identity....

I have also heard that boogies help support your immune system....

If they weren't meant to be eaten, then why do they taste so good....

it is the stigma attached that makes me feel slightly repulsed with myself for saying so...

I had no idea that that was a "taboo" thing to do until well into adulthood, as nobody ever told me that it was....

I knew nose picking was....but I am stubborn....

Well, if we're not meant to pick our noses, then why does my finger fit so well in my nostrils in the first place?!

I knew since I was about seven because kids made a big deal out of it. So I knew it wasn't normal because I didn't see anyone else doing it. I would see a few kids do it though. Same as knowing masturbation was taboo because my mom made a big deal out of it. So I did it in private.

I never knew swallowing snot was taboo until now. I never thought about it.

I think this only occurs in the self diagNosed

Oh I just ate too c'mon!! !! ! I hope you do this in private because a lady I worked with expectorated at the office very loudly and it damaged work relations.

I cant stand the feeling of some boogies in my nose, but I employ the tissue over the finger technique. I always want to pick while I'm driving too. I am an OCD hand washer so the whole picking thing is not in keeping with my clean hand obsession.
