So now, when I see children acting rude or teasing other children (or sometimes even teasing me), it reminds me of the way I was treated as a child, and I feel upset at the children I see acting this way (even though they are not the same children who teased me when I was a child). It seems strange that I feel this way. I realize that I should let go of the past and let go of my bad childhood memories, but when I see children misbehaving, all the bad memories come flooding back. That's one of the reasons I chose not to have children; I was afraid that if I had children of my own, I might mistreat them when they caused me this type of stress (although I would never want to hurt or abuse anyone, especially not a child). Maybe these types of feelings are a consequence of being an aspie, but I haven't read about any other aspies on this forum felling this way. If you are an aspie and have similar feelings of stress concerning children, I'd like to hear about your feelings and experiences. |
I have seen other posts on this forum, where Aspies feel this way, too. Sometimes, even now, when I walk down a street filled with schoolchildren, I get a knot of dread in my middle, and my heart rate goes up. I was teased and tormented in the schoolyard, as a child. I had some really brutal experiences with other children. So, I don't think it's a matter of letting memories go - I think that these memories are imprinted for life! But I am glad to say that I had one child, and I thoroughly enjoyed raising her. We "played" together a lot, when she was in grade school. I also encouraged her to give back as good as she got, if any child got physical with her. _________________ Dreams are renewable. Like others have said both really. In some ways I am and have far beyond many of my peers to put an age on it is tough. In other ways I am about 16 or so at best. _________________ Once I was considered a rock star in the world of aspiring Mathematicians, now.... |

I've always been more mature for my age, especially as a kid, but i don't think i'll ever feel "grown up". As a kid i never wanted to grow up and as an adult i still look like a teen. I'm also not afraid to embrace my inner child. I still enjoy doing many of the things i did as a kid. But then again, my interests as a kid were pretty boring.
I feel it's inaccurate that most of society gauges maturity on whether or not you do normal "adult" things like getting married and having kids. Even teenagers can do these things, and i actually find most adults extremely irresponsible (not that i find kids/teens any less irresponsible), and yet they feel very grown up.
Really, age is meaningless. It's all a matter of the wisdom you gain from your life, however long you've been living it or however young or old you feel. :) |

| I also generally feel much younger than my real age (27), and sometimes don't feel like any age at all. |

I am the opposite. I feel a lot older (I'm chronogically 30). _________________ <<<=== This is not the devil, this is the Red Guy from Cow and Chicken. |

I feel like I'm still college age in my mind, but my body feels like I'm ready for retirement.

I feel older than my actual age (and always have) because I see people around me as immature (just check the ridiculous shows they watch on tv). I care deeply about things like nature, ecology, animal rights, which pretty much everybody ignores completely.
Oddly enough I can enjoy "immature" things like teddy bears, drawing, or simply jumping around like an idiot
And i bet people see me as a little girl because of the way i talk, or simply am. For one thing I always have a finger in my mouth, being discretely eaten
I guess I'm both younger and older than my chronological age |

| It's weird, but when I was a kid, I felt much older than my real age at the time. Now, I feel much younger than my current age, 42. I feel like I'm about 25. Too bad I don't look like it, lol. |

I don't know about feeling any particular age but when I compare myself with others I find I enjoy older people a lot for one set of reasons and younger people for another.
I am often seen as slightly younger than I am yet when I entered my teens I was seen as older than my peers?
I am often seen as kind of a fool or innocent which is odd as I have lived a very full and often challenging life.
Does that make me feel any particular age - not really.
Does that answer the question?

No not at all .... I have never felt my actual age. I am now 42 and can't believe that I am that old. I still have the mind, excitement and wonder of someone much younger and I find a lot of adult type problems ( money, inlaws, bills, etc ) to be very very overwhelming and a source of anxiety / panic attacks.

Just yesterday, I turned 54 years old. My brother (who is three years older than me) phoned to say "happy birthday," and asked, "Can you believe that you're almost half way through your 50s?" I told him that I didn't feel that old at all. I feel much younger physically (perhaps like I'm still in my 20s). I walk, jog, and run regularly, and go to the gym twice a week to lift weights, and to use the treadmill, elliptical, and exercise bike. I doubt there are very many other women my age who are still that physically active. Mentally I feel younger too, which I think is good. I think that having a young mental attitude helps me stay cheerful and creative, and helps me avoid the cynical, discouraged, and even depressed mental attitude I notice in other people my age who do feel like their actual age. Since I'm an aspie, and since my husband doesn't enjoy a lot of parties and socializing either, we don't go to very many parties and social gatherings. And (since we love ballroom dancing) most of the social events we go to are dances, not just those types of parties where people sit around, visit, and eat unhealthy calorie-laden foods. At the dances, we spend most of the time dancing (burning off calories), and little time eating the refreshments. So I think that a limited social schedule is actually good for our health, and helps us both keep thin and healthy. I've noticed that many of my neurotypical friends and co-workers who do a lot of socializing are quite overweight, at least partially because they eat so much unhealthy food at their social gatherings. For most people, socializing and eating junk food seem to go hand-in-hand. But it doesn't have to be that way. I attend a noontime walking club with my co-workers at which no food is eaten. We just enjoy visiting together while we walk (on an indoor track during cold days, and outdoors on warm days). Many in the club have commented that it's a wonderful way to make new friends, get exercise, burn calories, and then return to work refreshed! The walking club is helping me immensely to learn to socialize appropriately, and overcome the poor social skills I have struggled with for so long as an aspie! |

When I was younger, (childhood specifically,) I always felt older than everyone around me. Now, in my fifties, I feel younger than most. It doesn't help, that I look about 15 years younger than my actual age, either. Not trying to cover the gray hairs anymore, at least gets me respect! _________________ Dreams are renewable.
