What I usually do when a virus interferes with Internet Explorer is do a system restore. That usually does the trick.

don't use internet explorer. no, seriously, don't.

if you don't want to use Firefox, or absolutely NEED an IE feature, use Opera - which has an IE emulation feature.

Go to Internet Explorer > When you open it, go to Tools > Internet Options.

When the options come up, go to advanced tab and there is a reset button, click it and everything will restore back to the way it was when Internet Explorer was there when it first was installed.

If that doesn't work, just restart your computer and it should then work again.

Good luck on getting your computer working. Smile

Google Chrome sends all your history to Google. It's a browser created by a targeted advertising company - Google's business relies on them knowing as much about you as possible. I wouldn't trust it at all.

IE8 is not rubbish. It's a perfectly serviceable web browser. There are good reasons (like blocking ads and improved security) to choose Firefox or Chrome in preference to Internet Explorer, but IE itself is not bad. Chrome is the most secure web browser AFAIK if you aren't concerned by it being a Google creation. Chrome also does well on the Acid website compatibility test, but that doesn't bear out my experience of using it - I've run into several sites which Chrome has problems with.

I haven't used Opera recently so can't comment. I don't like Safari, but that's more 'cause I just don't like the UI.

Firefox + NoScript = very secure IMO.

Why's Chrome the most secure?

in a documentary on BBC, it was revealed that virus writers all use firefox to guard themselves against the crap they created - as they all exploited IE to whatever extent. need i say more?

And your opinion comes from supporting how many thousands of computers, for how many years?

Please.

A sample of one is not a sufficient sample to make any sort of decision.

You want to believe IE is crap. It is an emotional response, not a rational one. When people want to believe they tend to stop thinking.

IE was infected, not through its own fault, but through a Flash player exploit or an Acrobat Reader exploit. This was Adobe's doing.

OP... give up. A virus infection cannot be reliably removed, not even by an engineer. Backup your files, format, reinstall, and restore your files.

In the future, be careful. The name of the game is PREVENTION. Do this:

Make your account a regular user, not an administrator
Set updates to install automatically (default setting).
Leave the Windows firewall running (also a default setting).
Install Microsoft Security Essentials (it's free)

That's it. Not logging in as administrator user is the single best thing you can do. The rest, just let the computer be. Don't mess with it and it will be just fine.

IE is prone via Active X controls - something that ONLY IE HAS. which is IEs fault, surely?

IE is part of windows (IE system explorer), so whatever happens in IE, happens to the system.

It's got some kind of fancy internal sandbox design, or so I heard. Firefox is also sandboxed but there've been a small number of security issues with Firefox over the years. I haven't yet heard of any with Chrome, though admittedly it's early days.

I agree with Dilbert. People want to believe IE is bad, even though it ain't (and considering it has the unhappy distinction of being by far the one most targeted by black hat fiends and the one most used by inexperienced users - neither of which is a flaw with the browser itself - it does alright.)

My experience is supporting around four hundred computers with a mix of browsers and operating systems over the last six or seven years with a user base dedicated to doing stupid things (which is to say teenagers and worse, teachers.) Wink Smile Mostly the browser used is a moot point - any computer security is ineffective against an inexperienced user with local admin rights. Wink
