Do any of you's with aspergers rock back and forth when standing up or sitting down? why and what's going through your mind? I tried asking my boyfriend why he does that and he says he does'nt know . I use to think he did it because he was nervous but I see him doing it when he thinks he's alone he also does it when he's lying down on his side ofcorse

Um.

Nervous was probably not a bad guess, in the same way that guessing that you (and here I make a large number of assumptions) call your friends because you're depressed is not a bad guess. The frequency probably increases because it's a soothing behavior.

As for why, that's pretty hard to answer. It feels good.

I do it a lot. Sometimes it can be to calm myself if I'm frustrated or nervous, but a lot of the time i feel fine and it's just relaxing. Most of the time I start doing it without thinking, but when I do realize i'm doing it I rarely stop myself, because it just feels good. It's just stimming, which usually isn't anything to worry about... It's just something autistic people tend to do. It's how we cope with the world. NTs sometimes do similar things, like tapping their fingers or tapping their foot, it's just usually to a much lesser extent than you see in those with an ASD.

Hello

Yes it seems to be very common, you can find more using the Google custom search within the site at the top of the page. search for "pace" or "pacing"

It is a kind of daydream, and it is very relaxing (to me at least)

Same here. It's soothing, relaxing. Isn't that what rocking chairs are for?

I do it when I'm having a nice time, laughing, etc. But I can also do it when I'm upset about something. In that case I think it's because it's soothing. When I'm laughing and having fun I think it's because there's just too much energy and it's got to come out somehow - like when I flap my hands. I'm just sort of excited about something and it can be pretty mild excitement, too. It doesn't have to be exaggerated. The same goes for rocking.

I have alot of questions, cause I think my boyfriend has aspergers (uncertainofhim) I finally conviced him to get checked by a Doctor. His family or his mom to be exact think he's just an as*hole and stupid but being his g-friend of 10 years, I know he'smart and sensitive. I've come to the end with him, I thought that maybe he is with me because he does'nt want be alone . Because he's not as affectionate or there for me emotionally. So we are having the same arguement over and over. I know tooo much info I'm oversharing .lol. I can't talk to anyone who's understanding his mom thinks he's just an idoit nothing's wrong with him but anyt ype of talking like kids ,moving even a job like a carpender she's said even in front of him "he's too stupid" or something to the effect of him failing(while he's standing there just pacing). Then talking to my family it's always "there's something wrong with him, break up with him" I also feel like maybe he just does'mt love me. I know I am not making excuses for him and believe me I'm not perfect at all but I believe this website can help I've notice alot of similarities between aspies and my b/f I know lonnng winded please reply someone . this must be really hard for him too. also How long did it take for you's to except (once diagnosed by a doctor) and be ok with it? He has fine motors sklls problems os he thinks aspie's are all only genius's

When I stand, I sway from side to side, and when I sit, I rock back and forth. I can't really explain why. It's just very calming/relaxing/soothing.

My friend does this. He used to do it so much that he was known for it, but that made him self-conscious so he stopped doing it while he was sitting down. He still did it standing up for a while and he was unaware of that. Now it's pretty rare.

I really think he's on the spectrum, but I don't think he thinks so.

Yes I rock while sitting and while standing and while laying down on my side. What's going through my mind is sometimes a chant that goes "There's-no-thing-here-there's-no-thing-here." But i could be thinking of anything.

I don't rock, but I do sometimes rub my leg back and forth across the sheet when lying in bed. I'm not thinking anything in particular--it just helps me relax and go to sleep.

Ah. So your problem is far bigger than wondering what a certain stim feels like.

I don't know if we can help. I was diagnosed very young, so it was really different for me.

I really don't want to be rude, but your post is hard to understand; can you please consider spell-check next time?

Yes!

But it's a lot milder now than when I was a boy.

rocking back and forth can be the most soothing thing I can do to calme me, whether it's nerves or I just need to consentrate. People aske me what I am going, one friend said "What are you doing? You look like one of those mental patients." and then my brother and that friend said I look like I am crazy. So I said "Ya, it look LIKE I am crazy- that's it."

hmm..maybe I am just crazy
