Is this a myth or a real sign of Aspergers? My husband does it all the time. Toe first when he is walking in shoes. And walks on tiptoes when he is barefoot. Even in standing position he will be on his toes if barefoot.
My 7 year old son walks the same and always has done from a toddler

This is pretty common on the spectrum. It may have something to do with sensory issues.

I have Asperger's and I've walked on tip toes all my life. When I'm barefoot or wearing just socks I always walk and stand on tip toes. My soles and heels pretty much never touch the floor, and if I for some reason I can't walk on tip toes, I walk kind of on the sides of my soles instead. When wearing shoes I walk strange too. On one leg I walk toe first, then sides and then heel, and on the other I put my foot flat on the ground when walking.

I walk on my toes and I hate the feeling of touching the floor when I walk more "typically." I've done this for most of my life.

Sometimes associated with the many cerebral palsies (invisible/almost invisible, mild, moderate, severe). Guessing that perhaps in a few instances it can be genetic. There are a few cases where temporary walking on the toes can be linked to modern nutrition/the food - beverages a person consumes. Walking on the toes implies that some muscles contract and others are relaxed (simplified). That's my understanding. Words: Kinesis, hyperkinesis, normal kinesis, hypokinesis; gross motor control, fine motor control, crossing the midline of the body, body balance, gait, posture, dyspraxia, etc. (Incomplete list).

As pgd said, walking on toes is also a sign for CP. I was born with CP and initially walked this way (in addition to other things), but through physical therapy mostly corrected it. I've also read that CP and AS might have some degree of comorbidity (they are at least both developmental conditions), so maybe its something to look into.

Walking on my tiptoes was another one of those Asperger's-related behaviours I pretty quickly learned not to do in front of anyone, thanks to a combination of threats at home and teasing at school. It does feel more comfortable for me to walk on my tiptoes, though, and having to walk on the pads of my feet all the time just makes me hyper-aware of how odd the sensation of walking feels.

I never knew this related to any sort of autistic behaviour until just a few days ago. I thought it was just me.

I prefer walking on my tiptoes to walking normally. It feels better that way for some reason.

I prefer to walk on tip toes because i am very insecure of my height of 5ft10 and want to look taller.

I don't walk on my tip toes but I do step toe to heel instead of of heel to toe which is how most people walk.

I've toe-walked ever since I learned how to walk. I never knew why until I learned that it's usually a sensory issue thing with Asperger's. It definitely does make you "feel" less when standing on the ground or walking. When I first got my AS diagnosis (and was still skeptical), I did lots of Google research and found the toe-walking commonality. That's what convinced my mom that I'm an Aspie. She had never heard of toe-walking anywhere else.

I walk normally while I'm wearing shoes, but when barefoot or in socks I have always walked on my tiptoes. I have always noticed that I do it, but until I had heard of AS I never thought much about it. Now I find it kind of interesting.

i did this as a kid, but then again i also had a heel full of plantar warts. they hurt to walk on, and my whole heel was covered in them. even aftern thet were gone, though, I still walked funny. I hated the comments made by uneducated people.

I've never done this. I put my entire foot on the ground all at once, drag my feet and walk with one foot pointed outwards.

I run on my tiptoes but I do not constantly walk on my tiptoes.

I like walking on my toes however, especially when I'm excited. I'd be surprised if everybody doesn't like doing it but they just don't.

I think all kinds of abnormal walks and gait are common in Asperger's and tip toeing is just one of the ways it expresses itself.
