Tranaslating, editing, proof reading, painting, writing music (I am not able at that). Generally any job which you can reduce as much as possible the necessity of relationships with others conditioned by your job. Also manual work, restauration.

I majored in computer science, if you work in a small company it gives you a lot of alone time. Big companies = team projects and meetings.

Self-employment with an e-business...

Most of us with Asperger's have one or two, or a few, different interests that we pretty much know everything about.

Find an inexpensive, easy to use, powerful website hosting system (I know of one, it's the same that I use for my websites and my websites support my family 100%) and build a website around your interest(s) and you can make money doing it (and it's not MLM or anything remotely like it).

Honestly, how many people know as much as you do about your particular interest(s)?

We don't have to be geniuses to do this (although most of us are geniuses in our particular interest). But I guarantee you that whatever knowledge you possess, there are many people out there that need information that you are in possession of.

It's extremely doable, you get to work at home and not worry about co-workers or bosses, and venture out as you are comfortable.

Got a day where facing the world, and all it's things that cause "issues" for us (sensory, social, etc.), just isn't possible? No worries, you don't have to leave home to do your work.

Got a day where you feel like going "out into the world"? Go for it! You are self-employed and you are your own boss.

It may sound unlikely but you'd be amazed at what you can accomplish. I did it, and I know others that have done it, and I know still more can do it.

Look at Alex here (the guy who started WrongPlanet) and how well he's done.

Rumor has it that the creator of Pokemon has Asperger's. He was (probably still is) incredibly interested in bugs and the first Pokemon were based on the bugs he liked. That's not his whole story but the point being, he took his interest and turned it into a "job" ("Job" is in quotes because when earning money while spending time at your interest, it's really not a "job", it's a "joy").

And when using a website building system like the one I use, anything is possible.

If anyone is interested in this sort of thing, before you jump at it and sign up with a web hosting company, contact me and let me at least show you the system that I use. I don't know if it's possible to contact me "off-forum", I don't really know if that works here or not.

If not, if I'm allowed to post a link I will. If not, then I'll post a direct email address (I already get so much spam at this particular email address that I'm not worried about those robot spiders coming out and grabbing it).

Truly think about an e-business. You are in charge, you are your own boss, you can work on your own schedule, you get paid for focusing on your interest, and you don't have to deal with co-workers or customers. Yep, you can do it without customers.

I know this post probably comes off as a "promotional" post but it's really not. It's simply my encouragement that self-employment, specifically e-businesses, be looked at as a possibility. :D

Hi re18!

Thanks for writing back!

Let's try an experiment...

No push or pressure or anything on the program I was referring to.

This is strictly to see if I can come up with an idea for a business based on your interests.

If you don't mind posting it here, what is your most intense interest? I'd love to see if I can come up with something that would incorporate that, something that would make you stop and say "hmmm". ;)

And even if I do come up with something, still no push or pressure on the program. :)

If you don't want to post your interests here I totally understand. :)

Thank you again!!
Diane

Biology, philosophy, mysticism. They are connected in my mind as they all refer to the question: why do I belong to life? Of course for most people who are integrated into life without problems, belonging to life is given for granted. Not so for people like Kleist or Kafka who spent their whole life asking themselves: where is justice, why they din't give me a job, why I was not admitted entrance in the castle as a land surveyor?

And I should have asked a couple more questions...

1. Is this one of those interests that you spend a significant of time on? Something that you know inside and out, and what you don't know about it you are willing to spend significant amounts of time on learning more?

2. Is this something that you are so interested in that you search out information online about it? And read books about it? Glean information about it from wherever you can?

3. And, is it something you would like to write about?

Not a book but web pages (maybe approximately 7-10 paragraphs per webpage)?

Don't worry right now that you couldn't come up with enough to fill the web pages, just is it something you would be willing to spend good amounts of time to write about? Does it grab you that much?
-------------

Or do you have a different type of interest that is all consuming?

For example, I am all about Titanic. I will spend time learning more and more about it to the detriment of my business. I can parlay the information I have and can continue to learn, into another business. But not a business where I have customers, or I have products that I have to sell. And I am willing to spend much time writing about what I know and what I learn.

My son can you tell everything about certain office supplies, such as binders. He can tell you exactly which binder you need depending the job you are doing, and why. He can also tell you which binders you definitely don't want, and why. His knowledge and intense interest on the subject goes much deeper than this but you get the idea right?

He can tell you why you want to use certain pens and pencils, and why you don't want others. He can tell pencils apart by the smell of the eraser, and the feel of the pencil in his hand.

He can parlay this information into a business, branching off into other related areas/items. Again without customers or having to sell products. But he has to be willing to spend time to write about it, which he isn't interested in doing at this time.

He can tell you all about shoes (skater shoes, hiking shoes, etc.) and what shoe you need for whatever you're using it for, and why you need that shoe (the grip and what it does, the feel of it, the material, and so on). He can use this knowledge and interest to create a business, again without customers or products to sell. Again, his knowledge and intense interest in the subject is much greater than what I've written here.

It needs to be something that you can provide information on (it doesn't matter how "off the wall" the subject might seem to someone else) and be willing to spend time writing/typing out that information.

So, all that being said, is this interest that you wrote about something that you'd be willing to spend time to write about? Or is there another intense interest that you would be willing to write about?

Thanks paolo!!
Diane

I gave it a lot of thought and I think I'm interested in

-the interior designs of home
-external architecture of homes( but how could I become an architect if I have no previos experience with drawing..)
- reading about weird stuff that happened
- reading about psychological disorders
- ancient history

so do you have any idea what I could do with this?

Hi re18!

Thank you for giving me a try. :D

Okay, first of all, you asked how you could become an architect with no previous drawing experience.

It's not about becoming what it is you're interested in, it's about providing information on the topic.

You don't have to be an interior designer, or a historian, or an architect, or a doctor, or anything other than someone who has an intense interest in something and is willing to spend time researching for more information on it, and willing to spend a good amount of time writing on that particular subject.

You build a website (no worries, with the program that I've mentioned here [not by name] you CAN build a website), and a very very successful one at that.

It walks you through everything, from helping you to come up with the best concept for your website; to providing you with a platform and a template so that you can just write and not worry about design - it'll "build" the website for you so that you can focus on writing about the subject; to analyzing your pages to tell you if you have enough mentions of the keywords (or not enough) to make your pages place well; to recording a lot of information about your traffic including what keywords people are using when they find your website; to telling you how to "monetize" it, meaning affiliate programs where you promote other companies products and earn commissions when your visitors purchase from those companies, and putting Google Adwords on your pages to earn money when people click on those ads (look to the left of here and you'll probably see a Google ad (it says "Ads by Google") - WrongPlanet.net makes money every time someone clicks on a Google ad here, etc. It literally walks you through from the very very beginning and stays with you as you build pages, tells you what information to write about, etc.

That's a long paragraph, I'm sorry, hard to break it up. I'm very passionate about this. In addition to doing my own websites with this program, I really try hard to help other people to see how this can work for them.

So, all of that being said... I did some research this afternoon on a few of the interests you mentioned. Below is a list of keywords/phrases that people are searching for in the search engines that don't have enough information out there, so it makes these keywords/phrases/topics "winnable" for you, meaning the system will walk you through how to end up in the top 1% to 3% (yes, 1% - 3%) of all of the websites on the entire Internet.

Again, you have to be so interested in it that you are driven to write about it. You have to be passionate about what you choose to go with. If you choose something that you are not passionate about then it will be a chore. Choose something you are passionate about and it will be a joy to do.

And if you think you can't write, this system also has free resources that teach you how to write to make your words sell, along with a whole bunch of other stuff.

These are the most valuable keywords/phrases for a few of the interests, in order of value within each topic.

Interior Design

attention deficit disorder

If you are passionate about one or more of those three topics, then you can build a profitable website around that passion strictly by writing about it.

I would give a couple of my own website addresses here so that you can see what I mean but I don't know if I'm allowed to.

But anyhow, the above are just starting points. And good starting points too! They are valuable keywords/phrases (the system searches out all of this information which is how I know that they're valuable).

If I'm allowed to give my own web addresses let me know and I will so that you can see. They're simple information websites (one I've had for a while but haven't been able to spend enough time on and the other is brand spanking new but is a huge passion so it will grow quickly).

For some numbers though... Out of 285+ billion websites, I have one that is number 2,054,042 through the whole world and in the US it is number 575,258 (according to Alexa). Another that is 3,186,002 (but it doesn't give me the rank for the US). Another is at 1,911,197 in the world and 449,131 in the US. Another that is at 711,543 in the entire world and 179,697 in the US.

It can be done and it can make a living for you.

Anyhow, if I'm allowed to give URL's here please let me know and I will. If not then I'll have to figure how to get info to you so that you can contact me direct if you'd like.

Sorry for the long post but I hope I've been able to show you all that this can work and that it's perfect for us Aspies, as long as we're willing to spend the time to research our interest and write about it. :D

And don't go out and sign up for a website until you've talked to me. I learned the hard way through lots of wasted tears and wasted money, that the way I'm doing it now is most definitely the way to do this.

Let me know what you think. I'd love to hear your thoughts. :D

Clinical work might not be the best choice but you can still help in other areas. I did a stint as a research assistant for an author who needed help with psychology issues. He would ask questions that I would research and prepare reports on so that he could incorporate the data into his books. The APA forums are great for finding things like that.

I guess I am trying to say do not give up on the psychology side just yet.

Thanks Diane

I appreciate the information you gave me above! Now you have me convinced its a good idea. I at least have the confidence to start this.
Please send me the links to the sites you've told me above. I'm also interested to see your website. You can send it to me as a private message in my wrongplanet account.

I am not giving up but considering my options, by the way is being a research assistant a good paying job, if I do psychology can't I get other type of jobs?(because of my AS)

I have degrees in Poli Sci and Psychology yet have been a Product manager, a Quant and a computer programmer so yeah you can do other things.

Research assistants start out low but can get reasonable amounts if they stick with it for a while (much like other professions). In line with what Diane was saying is that if you become adept at one area you can mine it well.

Congratulations. I don't mean to be rude, but how did you manage to get a job as a Quant without even a bachelors degree in mathematics, physics or engineering?
I can see that Poli Sci and Psychology degrees might cover statistics, and maybe even some game theory, but not much more mathematics than that.

Second question - are you still a quant, and if not, why did you leave?

The stats work for my Masters started me on my Quant path and then training at the place where I worked at the time filled it out. There were a number of Math PhDs there who had time to take me through my lessons. It was an amazing experience actually.

With the fall of finance I decided to go back to Software Engineering. It was a bit hard to read how the company you worked for had screwed so many people over.

What were the hours like?
And what was the work like? Did you need to respond to the market in real time like a regular trader, or did you produce mathematical models for others to use?
