I've always been the type to not like pills and research every little thing about them before considering/finding a reason not to take them. Risperdol had a pretty bad reputation so I didn't even try it. I had the bottle of it sitting around my room for the longest time too, don't know what happened to it.

At the time I was mostly afraid of the weight gain and growing breasts. :?

Mm, I've got an Aspie friend who's reported having the same experience.

I had to take that too, right after the Zyprexa. I was normal weight (127 lbs- 5'0) before I started those, and I ended up severely obese (190 lbs- 5'0").

Never, ever, again will I touch those two.

Ever. :skull:

I still have trouble with my weight, and I took those when I was 17. I am 30 now. :x

Hi Guys and Gals

I am a father to an Asperger child. He was diagnosed when he was 8. We knew something was up before the time but we manage the symptoms and because he is highly functional did no get professional help until the school forced us to do so.

Up until now we have managed with Brewers Yeast Supplements. But weight gain and enlarged breast in the boy we took him over to Cod Liver Oil. We cannot tell if all the major B vitamins in brewers yeast contributed to the weight gain, but the Cod Liver Oil does not have the same calming effect as the Brewers Yeast.

So weight gain is relevant ... Today the doctor told me to see a psychiatrist to get prescription for respradol to help with the child's depression. Since it is a psychotic drug I turned to the Internet. Reading all the stories about side effects is not good. The few people that are positive about the use of this drug is all about voices and paranoia ... for my child does not suffer from either, he is just over whelmed with the loads of work with all the school holidays, I am not sure what to do.

So for now I am going to follow my own mind and increase his Amino Acid intake to stimulate his saritonan production in the attempt to fight the depression. Any advice will be welcome ... please ...

Mine are really bad; all are hypersensitive.
Especially sound.
I'm thrown into a rage whenever I hear specific sounds, or when there are too many of them...

I wouldn't take medicine for them, though. Too worried about side effects.

@aspergersdad Ask your pharmacist about dosages in risperidone treatment for anxiety from sensory issues. It is vastly different than the dosage used to treat psychosis.

Does anyone have any experiences with this? I've booked an appointment with the psychiatrist at my local Aspergers Clinic (well, team. Part of a general Learning Disabilities clinic, but anyway). I tend to pick up a lot on light touches (which drive me crazy) and little sounds, as well as various textures. Loud/noisy* (*hard to explain..) sounds are acutely uncomfortable for me. So, yeah, usual aspie stuff. I was wondering if anyone's had experiences with this and Risperidone? What about the side effects? I've heard it can reduce your libido and sap your energy to do things, but that with some people it can result in more energy being freed up from sensory issues.

So, yes. I'd appreciate hearing people's experiences on this. Sorry for the rambly nature of the post, it's 4am here.

I started Risperdone for this problem and it helps me *immensely*. I am on a very low dose and so far (six months) have not experienced any side effects except minor sedation, which I handle well. I am very cautious about higher doses because I do not want to gain weight or develop movement disorders, but even low doses help me in a major way.

I'm currently on respiridone for 4 weeks now, the majority of side effects happen at the start and ease off, I'm very fortunate to have only suffered from very mild tremors and dry mouth.

Exactly. The dose I am on is *much* lower than what would be used in psychosis. I haven't gained any weight and I have had only minimal drowsiness and no other ill effects.

My 4 year old ASD child takes a very low dose for self injurious behavior and sensory issues. She has been on it for 8 months. It's instant with her. She wakes up - within minutes, something ultimately rubs her the wrong way and she goes into screaming, meltdown, hitting herself mode. I give her o.o5 (that's how little), send her to her room to "chill" out and within 45 minutes she returns able to listen and process. Other than her little buddah belly, we curb her eating or she would be heavy. I have noticed no significant side effects but I do not like her on it and we have been contemplating taking her off it....mostly due to the stories I read about internal damage to organs, like the liver.

I would not recommend risperidone for depression... It is not an antidepressant, and it can exacerbate the motor/cognitive "slowing" effect of depression if given to someone who is depressed. It can be used as a tranquilizer to combat anxiety, but that's like using a shotgun to swat a fly--there are much less heavy-duty meds that can be used for that purpose; many of the SSRIs have been shown to have a good effect on anxiety and depression, without the risk of organ damage and tardive dyskinesia--both of which are permanent, life-long effects that can happen within weeks, stay around for a lifetime, and increase in risk the longer the person is on the medication. They are risks that are worth it only if no less risky medication can do the job; after all, people with schizophrenia or another form of psychosis may not be able to think straight without them. But for autism, there are other options, and those should be tried first.

I'm on risperidone for bipolar, and it's pushed my prolactin level really high. I haven't started lactating, which is good, but before I started testosterone (I'm also transgender) it was affecting my menses. My psychiatrist is gradually dropping my dose, but my prolactin level still remains high. I'd like to go off of it completely, because it also made me gain weight.

I was prescribed Risperidone because I was flying into rages. Like Kate, it also helped me immensely, even at a low dose. I'd been on it for about one month, but was taken off it a few days ago because it fogged my thinking pretty badly.

Gosh, after reading all this I think I'll stick to my appetite suppressing anxiety inducing stimulants, which do decrease sensory issues - but it's rare for that to happen in autism.

I was on this for about two weeks a couple years ago before I threw them in the trash. Made me feel completely horrible, sluggish thought and delayed physical reactions. One of the worst things I've ever put in my body.
