When I search online, I don't find websites that seem trustworthy. I know there is the oxytocin nasal spray administered to women to induce labor and lactation, but is there anything else in those sprays? Could it be dangerous to a non-pregnant girl? I wonder if it is the same product used in experiments of the effects of oxytocin on psychology/mood/ASD symptoms?

I should probably be asking a doctor about this, but then I'd have to explain myself and pay him money (things I'd rather not do).

Why do you want to take Oxytocin?

Edit: Anyway you can check the side effects and see if it will harm you... but I guess major amount of this drug is still in clinical trials..

Oxytocin is destroyed in the gastrointestinal tract, so it is generally administered by injection, nasal spray, or sublingual dosage form. Bellevue Pharmacy currently compounds both oxytocin sublingual tablets and oxytocin nasal spray, which require a prescription.

So I wonder if the sites claiming to sell it are illegal or lying about their product (or both)...

I have no idea.. I tend to skeptical of everyone selling and everything being sold on the internet... I always go to my shrink for medicine and don't take anything that I think is not necessary.. I don't understand how this will change the autistic brain except it will add a compassionate side to you maybe if you are not compassionate enough to begin with. I would advice you wait if you don't mind till some further research is done on this topic or why don't you ask your therapist?

Well I don't have a therapist and don't really want one.

I guess it would be smart to wait. I was sort of thinking that they are just going to package it up differently for commercial reasons, but oxytocin is oxytocin. If it reduced ASD symptoms in studies, why not try it?

But of course "why not?" isn't a good reason to do something you don't understand, which is why I waited. I guess I'll keep waiting, but I've never liked dealing with mental health professionals.

I think it would be dangerous. Anything that forces you to trust and love other people would make you much more vulnerable to exploitation, and we're already naive and vulnerable enough as it is. While you might have an easier time making eye contact or initiating conversations, that's too much of a price to pay for that dangerous an effect.

You mean dangerous effects like not being labeled a weirdo within 30 seconds of socializing? Yeah, you're probably right.

Its a natural hormone that is important for a lot of things, including contractions during labor, orgasms, and social bonding.

Its been shown to be deficient in the brains of monkeys raised in isolation and in people with autism.

Its also been shown to improve empathy in men and people with ASD. After inhaling oxytocin nasal spray, men performed as well as woman on empathy tests, and people with ASD perform more like neurotypicals.

Yeah I just looked it up on erowid.org.....it sounds like it could be helpful, as it says how it can help with autism and social interaction. I do not think I would consistantly want to take that though because I have my reasons for not trusting people. I have not found any really dangerous side effects yet....so it might be something worth looking into.

I think you'd probably still be labeled a weirdo. You'd just love the people who labeled you.

Haha perhaps. The idea is that increasing your empathizing ability would make your responses more appropriate given the feelings of others, and as a result they would actually find you more appealing to hang out with because you more accurately assess and consider their feelings during social interactions (which I personally do not believe is a bad thing.... the fact is that other people have feelings, and it is MY problem if I am not in tune with them as well as others).

Also, if one really becomes better at empathizing, I'd think you'd also become better at lie detection because the motives (good or bad) of others would be more easily accessible to you and you would be more aware of things like body language (although I've read body language is really not as useful for detecting lies as people often think).
