PE was required for me in Middle School. I think I only took it in 6th and 8th grade. In High School, you only need 1 credit of PE. Luckily, Band can count as PE. I dodged a bullet with that rule. I did take "Personal Fitness" once. It's required. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays you're shoved into a room where a teacher rambles on about Personal Fitness topics: Weight, Nutrition, etc. On all other days, we could either wonder around the gym and do whatever we want witth little supervison, or workout in the weight room. I normally used the weight room. _________________ (Currently undergoing personality reboot) |

I don't really know much but at my Comm. College, you can take a physical fitness type course such as weights, yoga, kickboxing, etc. I don't know if you have to take a course like this, or if it is only for extra curricular units.
I don't really know why colleges would require PE type classes. Were adults, it's our body, let us do what we want with our health. Some students would probably waste the course with there dorm, binge and frat parties anyways.
If a student had time, they could join a fitness club, club sport, or an intramural team sport. Then they could learn something about there conditioning. But why force college students into required Phys ed?
I'm am sure some students would like to avoid the athletic and PE stuff and focus on the academics, which college is for in the first place. But then the college jocks are skipping the classes and relying with the athletics (a major no-no in the NCAAs, but what do they care? I know, money). |

Finally though, PE needs to be made more of a physical fitness style class and less a team sports style class. I saw a study years ago that suggested that PE in its current form does not even lead to the jocks leading a healthly lifestyle. |
Yeah, no kidding. Just look at today's scholastic jocks and there candy and soda machines. Don't forget steroids, booze, drugs and smoking. Even pro athletes have this problem too. You can be most athletic person on the playing field and be very conditioned, but still be one of the unhealthiest people on earth with there tarred lungs, wasted livers and high cholesterol, etc.
Other groups of people who really should be concerned for health and fitness while they are school are students who want to join in physically required jobs such as police and firefighting.
I don't care if any of these officers are middle-aged or not, I do not want an overweight, out of shaped officer chasing some young perp who stole my bike or whatever. Movies and TV like to play on this a lot.
Cut down on the donut shop, and get in shape while off duty please. It doesn't require a full blowout regimen to stay in shape folks. |

Interesting reply nocturnalowl.
I however was thinking more in the lines of PE class ecouraging physical fitness in the population in general rather than any specific population. The way PE is done right now, most people are turned off of physcial fitness altogether because it is designed to cater to the jocks.
As far as the soda/candy machines are concerned, money talks and PS walks. Most colleges are no better than high schools. Supposedly, required health classes are supposed to teach the dear ones how to eat healthy but not they are too busy teaching about other subjects which will not be mentioned in this thrs thread.
I do not think things will change however. There are too many people who are entrenched in the current system. _________________ Louis J Bouchard

i always dreaded PE class. Most of the time I was one of the last picked. Then Im stuck playing with a bunch of jocks I absolutely hate.
Oh and the injuries, i remember ninth grade PE we were playing soccer, I was on deffense, and one of the offensive players on the opposing team kicked me in the shin trying to steal the ball away from me. I was in so much pain by the end of the day I could no longer walk. |

I was playing volleyball in ninth grade gym one day. The other team hit the ball towards me. I went after the ball along with another person. Our feet tangled and we both crashed to the floor. I was wearing shorts and I skinned the hell out of my left knee.
The teacher wrapped up my knee in a bandage which I had to wear for the rest of the day. Becasue of my sensory problems, the feel of the bandage on my left knee drove me insane for the rest of the day.
In sixth grade gym class we were playing dodge ball one day, during that time period my upper body had no strength to it what so ever, so I would have to heave the ball with all my might just to get any velocity on it. Well I picked up a ball and heaved it and felt a intense burning sensation in my back. I pulled a muscle in my back and I was in quite a bit of pain for the remainder of the day even though I didn't tell anyone. _________________ I live my life to prove wrong those who said I couldn't make it in life... |

| If you're required to take PE in college to graduate. I recommend taking an PE online class if you can. I did not like PE in school, and I don't want to take it in college. We are adults and we can take care of our own bodies. |

Lucky you. PE isn't going to help fatness. Its just the school's excuse to legally torture the students as well as other student's excuse to torture other students. If your school cut down on PE, its probably because they have a really bad budget. _________________ This is my signature. Pretty cool eh?
