I don't know if I'm really considered a furry or not. I like animal characters a lot, but I like human characters as well. I do mostly draw animal characters, but humans not very often.
Dude, people pull your mind out of the gutter. Grow up. being a furry is little different than being an anime fan. I'm a furry, but I have very high sexual morals. I even told my mormon bishop that I'm a furry, and he approved.
Anyway, my fursona is an anthopomorphic cat named mike. He is almost exactly like me, but he is in an alternate universe populated with anthros. I chose a cat, because, you know, all cats have aspergers. X3

Well, it's time again for one of my overly long posts on the subject of the furry fandom.
Over9000 is right. Don't try to label a subculture until you fully understand the underlying concepts behind them. Most people who criticize the fandom like to accentuate the bad because the fandom has been known to be responsible for strange and even terrible things. The Furry Fandom encompasses a wide array of things that are connected because they deal with animals or mythical creatures in one form or another. Mostly antropomorphic, but not always. There are all sorts of different types of furries. We aren't homogenous.
@TB_Samurai, you can draw animals and/or anthros and not call yourself a furry. It's a matter of choice. Whether or not you want to belong to the community is entirely your choice.
@Crow_T_Robot I just wanted to first let you know that your username is boss. We used to have a Tom_Servo on here some time ago, I believe. Anyways, the furry fandom isn't a fetish, but some people make it a fetish. From what I gather, the ones that have a fetish related to the fandom didn't get into the fandom in the first place for sexual reasons.
@Lecks The thing with me is that I was so intensely critical as to the fandom in front of my friends that I suppose that they were very surprised that I had chosen to join a subgroup that they thought I hated. Even now, I have a habit of calling furries 'furfags' because it's the term I'm used to using.
There are zoophiles in the fandom. In fact, I know one, but he's so intensely down to Earth and he has a girlfriend(also a furry. I don't know if she is a zoo but I don't think so), so I highly doubt that he'd ever practice bestiality. I couldn't tell you about the rest of them because that's one of the part of the fandom that I don't intend to learn more about. I'm a very observant and analytical person, but I haven't encountered enough zoophiles to formulate any opinions. Seeing as to how a great deal of furries in the fandom are unrealistic and irrational(more common the deeper you venture into the fandom), I'm sure this part of the fandom is mostly malignant.
Most of the furry fandom expresses itself through art rather than through costuming and roleplay as some of you may think. Honestly, I believe that cartoon animals are fun in art because they're easier to exaggerate than Humans. I personally think that you can get away with a lot of angles and curves and facial expressions than you can with Cartoon Humans. It is for this reason that I am drawn to furry art. More specifically cartoony art styles and surrealism. When people are going for realism, I think that using Humans is a better idea. As such, I dislike realistic furry art.
Long posts~~~~
I'll find some examples of good furry art and link them from photobucket because apparently Furaffinity doesn't allow me to link. So instead, here's some music by a very prominent member of the fandom, Renard. He's probably the most well known musician in the fandom.

You guys are just weird. I like to dress like my favorite mathematical formulas...

Did anyone notice what the formula is?
Drake's equation.
Damn me, how did I miss that? It's my favorite equation(went through an astrobilogy period) but I haven't seen it in some time.

Thanks! Crow is on up there on my list of favorite fictional characters.
I know the furry fandom is not necessarily sexual, but several people had commented on the fetish side of the fandom and that's why I made the comment. I think when most people refer to "furries" in a negative sense, they're referring to sexual furries. _________________ There's a party in my head

Understandable. I'm so incredibly used to having to explain the fandom to people, so it's built in. Or at least it has been for some time(even before I was one) _________________ Like a plane without wings

I hate it when people say bronies are furries
We are ORTHODOX BRONIES
Both fandoms overlap. Some Bronies mutate into furries and some furries partake in the brony fandom. A lot, however, greatly dislike said fandom because a lot of bronies are hostile towards them and because the show is so overrated(it is, and yet I enjoy it) Proof:

A very interesting journal post on the degradation of the fandom and the fact that mostly stupid furs are proud of the subculture in public. Quite analytical.
