The episode mentions Asperger's and vaccines for about the first seven minutes, then it delves into some recycled jokes about the Matrix and fast food moguls, terrible episode. |
Well that is why I never liked this show, I feel that Anonymous was the one who sparked this episode probably. |

It didn't bother me. It did point out the silly way some are diagnosed, which I liked. *shrug* Oh well. |

I was excited when I saw that South Park was doing an episode on Asperger's. I assumed they'd be outrageously critical of some aspect of it. The plot line with Cartman faking "ass-burgers" was right in line with what I'd have expected. Otherwise, it was confusing and disappointing.
I came here and read this thread hoping to get a grip on the origin of the Matrix-like group claiming AS is not real. Was that just generally making fun of people who don't have AS claiming to have it? Was it poking fun at people with AS who don't see it as a disorder? Was it poking fun at some recent event or media portrayal of AS that I haven't heard about? Was it intended to suggest that AS is over diagnosed?
The diagnosis of Stan based on symptoms that just seemed like depression and treatment with alcohol didn't make much sense to me. I was left a bit concerned about the effect this will have on the public perception of AS. I can understand them poking fun at the accuracy and significance of an AS diagnosis and limitations in treating it, but it would have made me feel a lot better if they had made some minor attempt to represent the true nature of AS. And I won't go into the whole vaccination causing Asperger's thing...
I can't tell if the South Park guys either don't understand AS, or if they understand it well and just wrongly assume their audience is informed about it. Either way it was a fairly lame episode if you ask me. _________________ I started a blog cataloging news about Asperger syndrome at www.45P13.com |

I watched it last night. I had hoped that it would somewhat explain to the public what AS is; instead, it just said that "Asperger's is not well understood." The basic premise was that aspies are cynics who self-medicate. |

| I'm not really a fan of the show, but South Park isn't exactly where you go for educational material anyway. At least, I hope it's not. |

That's true, but usually the show makes a point, taking a pretty gross path to get there. This one was mostly missing the point, one way or another, except that drinking will allow Stan to survive the NT world.
The part when the fast food people were ragging him about ditching his friends was funny to me, though. |

I watched it again. I paid closer attention the second time. It does briefly allude to what AS actually is, but even after watching it twice I'd say the overall impression of AS that people might come away with is what N0tYetDeadFred described. I'd add to that maybe the impression that depression is AS and that AS isn't real.
I agree yamato_rena that South Park isn't exactly educational material, but it usually has some real social commentary embedded in the school boy humor. If the message was that socially awkward people should stop using AS as an excuse or something like that, I think they needed to make it a bit more apparent. It seemed to me like they were saying AS isn't real.
Does anyone know if the two guys in the hall were supposed to be anyone in particular (guy blowing bubbles with his butt and guy urinating on all over)? Did I miss part of the joke? _________________ I started a blog cataloging news about Asperger syndrome at www.45P13.com |

I think the only social commentary one can make on that episode is that people are ignorant. |

Really? Are they going to bring it out on DVD one day? I have to watch that!
I know I get disturbed by a lot of names about Autism that get thrown around a lot on WP, like ''aliens from the wrong planet'' and so on, but funnily enough watching an episode about Autism does not disturb me. It'd probably be something like Cartman pretending to be Autistic so that he can claim disability money (if they get that in the USA?)
That's going to be so cool to watch! Ohh, I'm desperate to watch it right this second! _________________ Real gender: Female

| Cartman doesn't pretend to be autistic. He tries to fake the condition by stuffing hamburgers in it pants behind his butt and then going to the nurse's office and saying he has that condition. He misunderstood what the condition is. Then he runs his own hamburger stand. |

| I didn't see it as mocking people with AS, but satirising people who think it is caused by vaccination. |
