It appears that way, what with Russia threatening to launch their nukes if we "intervene" in Syria or Iran. We sent a gunboat to persuade Syria to release Americans peacefully, well Russia sent three destroyers. Now Russia is threatening to attack Afghanistan. And China has said that they will use their nukes if we OR Israel attack Iran. It looks like the Mayans were right, and the world will end in 2012. Say goodbye to those you love and kiss your own butt goodbye, because the end is coming.

Will we have time for the London Olympics on TV first?

Unquestionably, yes. The world order seems to be breaking down, just like it did before WWII. The UN took a while, but it finally became the League of Nations, whose paralysis in the face of German, Italian, and Japanese aggression throughout the 1930s contributed to WWII.

Yes, absolutely. Things are getting out of control. Now, if it happens, what will happen here in America? We are already seeing a split of the nation. Imagine what a 3rd world war would do.

Now, I wouldn't say it is the end of the world. I see 2012 as the beginning of a new era. I could see a societal reset. Part of me sees that as a very good thing. My only fear is that the wrong person will rise if that happens.

didn't we already do this thread like last week?

I think no. "world war" implies that at least most of the major world powers will be involved, and i think that modern communication makes it much harder to convince a preponderance of russians that all americans want to destroy them or whatever.

I doubt it. If we could survive 45 years of the Cold War, this should be nothing. Do you really think China or Russia or the US are willing to destroy the entire world over some irrelevant little countries like Syria, Iran, or Afghanistan? If anything, maybe Russia and China getting involved will force the US and Israel to resort to some diplomacy instead of bombing and occupying.

Haven't they already debunked the so-called predicted Maya "apocalypse"? -.- Why are people still refering to it? -.- Basically put, it's only because the cycle of the Mayan calendar was meant to end at 2012, and they hadn't thought about going beyond. Now stop using that sort of excuse for your doomsaying, please.

Maybe Russia and China won't, but Iran will, especially if things go unchecked in the next 12-18 months. They have a serious Messiah complex in that country.

I think the biggest problem is the amount of nations that now have nuclear arsenals and it only takes one hostile nation and we're all in touble. Even during the cold war the will was not to have nuclear war. During the Cuban Missile Crisis both nations understood that they had taken it too far and reached a compromise and to my knowledge nothing like it happened again. Even during the 90s when I think it was Boris Yeltsin was advised they might be under attack, he rightly refused to believe it and took no action. Today we have North/South Korea and India/Pakistan with a long history of tension, but with the added nuclear threat. We have Iran enriching uranium and making no secret of the fact that Israel should wiped from the map. I'm not saying nuclear war is certain, but it's terrifying! Also there is no doubt trouble brewing over arctic oil and nothing seems more certain to start a war thesedays than everybodys favourite fossil fuel!

They wouldn't have to convince their people. They could just launch the nukes. And I don't think it's really changed that much; the Cold War only just ended in the 1990s. Sure there was no Internet, but the world in say, the 1960s, was pretty modern and quite globalized already. It wasn't the stone age.

I think he was just saying that at least coincidentally, if WW3 starts next year (ie 2012), it will vindicate the believers in a way. :D

Possibly... But i hope not. on my end of the world the usa has to many "wars" already. I put it into parentheses because none are declared as such so they dont need congressional approval. not one of them is a declared war, Vietnam wasn't even one. but that didn't stop the draft did it.......

Iran will have nukes in about a year according to the news.

The end 2012 is coming in about a year.

Coincidence?

W O R D!

People need to get a clue. Communism in Russia and China has simply been replaced by thugocracy. In most ways these countries are more dangerous now because they are not hobbled by impractical economics.

Americans are the only ones who think the cold war is over. Russia and China are both very ambitious powers and the US is still their only credible rival.

I think proxy wars are more likely than direct conflict but anything could happen.

I also would not rule out a limited nuclear exchange between Iran and Israel or Pakistan and India or even a [nuclear] terrorist event of some sort in the next few years.
