Anyone who's played Luigi's mansion will understand. Luigi treks into this haunted mansion he was deathly scared of to save his brother. He's trembling with fear most of the time, Scared shitless as he cries out for his lost brother. If anyone knows a more courageous hero, go ahead and explain yourself. I mean, Link, the character branded with the Triforce of Courage, acts more like a mentally handicapped swordsman who can't understand and recognize danger, with no sense of self preservation. Running headlong into danger without looking twice, confronting giant monsters, even as a child, with no backup or even promise of survival, and showing no fear? That's not Courage. That's Stupidity.
So... Yeah. Luigi is the most Courageous hero ever.

Hope Esthiem from Final Fantasy XIII is more courageous than Luigi in Luigi's Mansion. Having to deal with all these different emotions while staying strong for a dead mother is way more courageous than looking for a brother you know Nintendo will probably never kill off. I don't think there's a most courageous hero ever.

Hope is voiced by Vincent Martella, AKA Phineas. Yes, that Phineas. Also, Luigi really doesn't get enough credit, but Nintendo has actually made some references to this in official works now. Well they say that true courage is not the absense of fear, but the will to fight despite the amount of fear.
Reminds me of what consider to be one of the bravest anime characters I have seen; It is a guy who is so shy that he is afraid of people even looking at him and would generally cower when some one confronted him, but despite that when something really mattered he would fight.

playing as luigi in paper mario for the wii is awsome.

No he isn't. Are you sure you know what Courage is? Hope was conflicted, but mainly kept moving forward in order to avenge his mother. That isn't Courage, that's revenge fueled Perseverance. And If you are using the argument that Luigi could know that Nintendo wouldn't kill Mario, than I'd counter with Hope knew he and his mother were computer programs and also that his emotions were never real in the first place. I am saying most Courageous because I've never seen another hero complete a game before while shaking with fear the whole time. As Bradleigh said, True Courage is not the absense of fear, but the will to fight despite the amount of fear. In that sense, I haven't ever seen a more Courageous Hero in Gaming than Luigi.

Why do you think the Pulse L'Cie have to fight Eidolons? Because they've lost their will to fight, and Hope's Eidolon comes way after he's settled things with Snow. There is even a song titled "Will to Fight" when you're playing as Hope. I'd say it takes a lot of courage for Hope to keep on going despit knowing what he's going up agaimst, what's at stake if he doesn't coplete his Focus. After all, the reason L'Cie become Cieth in the first place is because they've given up,lost the courage to keep going.

Courage is what makes you stand when your legs are immobilized by the fear of falling, and Will is the voice that tells you that you need to keep moving forward. Very similar in function, but fundamentally different. Saying and doing are two completely different things.
I am not saying Hope doesn't show ANY Courage, just that his Courage isn't greater than Luigi's.
About Hope's Focus. At that point, he didn't know why to keep on fighting. He was working with the man who killed his mother, they were fighting an impossible fight, and he had nothing to gain from it. Maybe it would just be better to turn into a Cie'th. Maybe his friends would kill him. Maybe then he would see his mother. Those are the kind of thoughts that brought out his Eildolon. He lost his Purpose to fight, his Will to continue. That had nothing to do with Courage.

But Luigi's legs shake almost everytime he sees a ghost in that mansion. And he doesn't seem immobilized to me, otherwise he wouldn't suck up the ghosts in his vacuum. According to the Oxford Dictionary of English:

Alen ridgely from xenosaga series. not only is he brave but one of the best examples of character development i've ever seen. they drag him though hell in the 3 games in the series, and though more scared then he should be he sticks with the group even at the times he had a chance to walk away. and in each game he slowly starts standing up for himself and in 3 i believe played the most critical rule to defeat the enemy.
luigi is brave but the mansion didn't seem all that scary, if he was in fatal frame's mansion i would totally agree, that's the downside to cartoony graphics i guess. i found the game more boring then anything my bro is the one that played it. i guess i wanted something a bit more on the horror side. like fatal frame.

Xenosaga. I've only beat the first one, but it was pretty good.
