I'm getting a PS3 for X-mas and as everyone knows the PS3 has the ability to play blu-ray. I thought about some day getting some blu-ray movies since I am also getting a small HD TV for my bedroom, but my friend said I should wait and get a blu-ray player because he claims that blu-ray discs will tear up the PS3 lens over time. Is this true? Because I really hope not, I would like to just be able to play blu-ray movies on my PS3 system.

| No, of course not. Playing a Blu-ray movie on a PS3 is the exact same, as far as reading the disc goes, as playing a game on it, since those are Blu-ray too. |

Wait... Sony created both the PS3 and the Blu-Ray player. Why would the PS3 even be damaged by something that was created for it? That makes no sense!

Congrats on getting a PS3. I've had mine since October and I love it. I don't miss PC gaming at all.
I think you'll be happy with it.

OK thank you guys for helping me out. I've made my decision and if I get the chance I'm going to try and get me some blu-ray movies to play on my PS3. I think I will get that Kill Bill bundle I saw at walmart for just $20.  |

Well the first generation of PS2s were all shipped with defective disc drives. I don't remember what it was but the drives had life spans of only about a year of regular use. I think it was some kind of drive/motor problem and since DVDs are constantly reading info unlike games which just read a bit to load up then mostly sit idle it meant that watching more DVDs made the drives fail faster. No idea of any validity to that but remember hearing that. I know I used mine almost exclusively as a DVD player and it was dead within about 6 months of buying it while some big gamer friends had their first generation system for almost 2 years before it died.
But anyways, likely people still jaded about that huge issue with the ps2 going around saying something about the ps3, maybe even someone got one that had an unlucky bad drive and immediately went 'omg, same defective crap as the ps2!'
I've heard of nothing of the such though and have had my ps3 for more than 4 years now and it's been, again, exclusively used as a blu-ray player, and heavily used without any issue.

I haven't had problems with my ps3 even considering i bought it used on eBay almost a year ago (it's a phat 40 GB version, went for it because I don't like the slim design)
i've seen about 10-15 BD movies, and I have no idea how much the previous user used BDs... it had a CoD4 save on it when I got it, so I presume it's been used heavily by its former owner, but the drive itself still works like a charm
The "fat" PS2s all had pretty unreliable DVD drives... First gen had too cheap parts; snapping drivebelts and misaligning laser assemblies to name a few. Later fat PS2s would sometimes spontaneously burn out the laser (especially when modchipped)... there was something about the laser voltage controller that sent a voltage spike though the laser under certain conditions.
Also the myth may be (in part) a result of xbox360 fanboys making up a pendant of the RRoD that has plagued many a 360 over the years
GreySun369: FYI, depending on the size of the tv, you may not be able to see the neat HD stuff... Thumb of rule is anything below 24" works best as a computer monitor (and there's no real need for blurays), but if it's 30" or larger, blu-ray playback and the HD goodness will massage your eyebballs |
