Super Monkey Ball is one of my favorite games. It combines skill and logic with teetering puzzles and cute little monkeys. However, this latest installation to the genre is outright pissing me off. I've had the game a whole 2 weeks and there are so many glitches its sometimes impossible to play. I've had levels switch places, switching an ordinary level for a bonus level, leaving no way to finish. I've had my monkeyball get stuck in paritions, instead of bouncing off of them. But my largest complaint has to be with the controls.
In order to beat the game completely, you have to play through with both sets of controls. The slider works just fine, letting you execute sharp turns and even stop. Its the motion sensor that is complete crap. First off, it's a 3D game, meaning in order to play in 3D, you have to keep the screen 10-12in. away from your face and straight on at all times, or you get 2 blurry screen images instead of one crisp one, and yet the motion sensor controls require you to tilt and move your 3DS all over while playing. Logic tells me to switch off the 3D (frustrating, as its one of the big draws of the system), but even in doing so, the game is still almost unplayable in this mode. Even in 2D, the screen is very difficult to see when tilted, which causes a fade-out effect. Not to mention that the motion sensor is so touchy, you can't stop, and its nearly impossible to slow down without turning. I feel as though they pushed for so much content on this stupid game they forgot to make sure its fun and playable.

(and this is all ignoring the 2 other play-modes, which are just very poorly coded rip-offs of mario kart and super smash bros.)

anyone else have video games they were gravely disappointed by?

I played through all the levels in Super Monkey Ball 3D, and I never saw any glitches. It was actually much easier than the five other Super Monkey Ball games I've played through on the Gamecube, Wii, and DS.

cornflake- thanks for moving this. I realized that there's a video game forum after I posted it.

venger- maybe I got a faulty cartirdge? I've had weird glitches galore. It must not be reading correctly. Did you play with both sets of controls? I felt that the control-pad made the game much easier than previous installations, but the motion sensor controls made it much more difficult. Hm. Perhaps some more reviews from others would be helpful.
is there any video game that you found that frustrating or disappointing? Always good to know the ones to avoid lol

Analog stick/d-pad controls are usually superior to touch screen/motion sensor for controlling the main character in a game. Maybe your touch screen needs to be re-calibrated or you have a defective cartridge or 3DS.

I never experienced any glitches at all.Having said that, I think it is an incredibly poor game anyhow. There wasn't much challenge to it at all, it felt cheap to me. I mean in alot of the levels there are rails or bumpers if you will to provent you from falling off. Where is the fun in that? Also none of the levels/backgrounds appealed to me.I enjoyed the theme in the first super monkey ball for the gamecube alot more, like with the retro diner and burger joint themes found in the first world.

Also I agree, the tilt controls were terrible and are pretty stupid idea on a 3d handheld with such a limited viewing angle.

SMB is sadly becoming like Sonic in being more of the "thrill" rather then the skill. Sonic games tend to be virtual rollercoaster games rather then platformers whilst SMB seems to be going in a similar route.

Hopefully the Vita will bring back the original mechanics.

Though I don't have SMB, my 3DS and it's own motion sensors are fine as far as I know.
