Yes, Luther and Calvin have your back on this point. In fact, most Mainline Protestant denominations, who are the theological descendants of Luther and Calvin, don't have any doctrines based on Revelations, and consider it at best a very minor book.

| Great visionaries are always considered crazy. John predicted the possibility of global warming and he predicted that an asteroid would hit Earth if we did nothing to stop it. We have nuclear energy and nuclear rockets that can prevent both tragedies but the environmentalists don't want us to us it. |

| And it is true that with nuclear weapons we are indeed on the road towards Armageddon but I disagree with the evangelicals who insist that there is no way to stop Armageddon because prophecy must be fulfilled. With evangelical logic Jonah would have to be considered a false prophet because Nineveh did not burn. |

I agree that it is wrong to put one's faith in people. They will (almost) always let you down.
I believe, however, that there is nothing wrong with each of us trying to make the best interpretations of what was meant by Jesus' sayings and other scriptures. Unfortunately, as you note, we are all biased. That is true on scientific debates (where the people who are made better off if global warming is not anthropogenic believe that it is not anthropogenic and vice versa) and also on religious/political debates (poor innercity Black churches support liberal Democratic causes, saying that the Bible tells them to do so, just as poor inner city Black non-believers support the same causes. Rich suburban white churches support conservative Republican causes saying that the Bible tells them to do so, just as rich suburban unbelievers support the same causes).
It takes extraordinary effort to distance one's interpretations from personal desires. Some tools can help with that, and good scientists employ those tools in scientific debates while good theologians employ similar tools in religious debates. I try to do this, but I am certain that I sometimes fail. |

Of course you will sometimes fail. It's possible to get it right sometimes, but impossible to always get it right.
No matter how scientific of a person you are, you WILL have internal biases, be it your own desires or something your parents taught you when you were growing up.
Human nature is human nature, to think it can be so easily beaten is to be foolish.

We all have biases. That is why we have scientific protocols, to weed out observer bias.
