I've never really done anything to observe Black History Month in the past, but due to a recent increased interest in civil rights history/social justice issues, I'd really like to take part in some of my college campus's various events observing the occasion. Tomorrow, I'm going to try to attend an African-American Women's book reading, and I'd also like to attend a lecture on Pan-Africanism and Malcolm X. _________________ What fresh hell is this? |

I watched something on one of those C-span channels- don't ask me why- and they had some college lecture from somewhere where the discussion was use of the N-word in literature classics. I thought it was kind of an interesting discussion or I was just procrastinating.

No. Flannery O'Connor uses that word a good bit and even in the title of one of her stories. She uses it to make a point. Also, it's a reflection of the times back then in the Deep South. It paints a picture of the character. She uses it in dialogue. _________________ Frances

Unfortunately, in the UK, we don't have such a thing as this (maybe in some establishments, but not as a norm). It's a shame because the educational aspects would be of great benefit to many. _________________ "We act as though comfort and luxury were the chief requirements of life, when all we need to make us really happy is something to be enthusiatic about." In the UK we have Black History Month in October, but as far as I know we do not have anything similar to:
Irish-American Heritage Month
Greek-American Heritage Month
Arab-American Heritage Month
Tartan (Scottish-American) Heritage Month
Jewish American Heritage Month
French-American Heritage Month
Italian-American Heritage Month
National American Indian & Alaska Native Heritage Month
I could not find any reference to there being a celebration of Hawaiian heritage or culture. Is that because it was eroded when Hawaii was annexed? _________________ 'You seem very clever at explaining words, Sir,' said Alice. Do we? I never knew. That explains the mixed race season on BBC last year. Neither my best friend, who's Afro-Caribbean, nor I knew why all those programmes were on and I couldn't find any reference to Black History Month in the TV schedule. So now we know. _________________ "We act as though comfort and luxury were the chief requirements of life, when all we need to make us really happy is something to be enthusiatic about."
