So what it seems like to me is that people who identify as "hipsters" (or those who do everything hipsters do but deny being a hipster) set out to do things that are "uncool", because they are uncool, talk about how cool they are, until people think they're cool, then dismiss them as "uncool" because people think they are cool, and find something else "uncool" to do, while claiming that because they do "uncool" stuff, that they don't care what other people think. But if they don't care what people think, why not just do what they enjoy, without worrying about whether it's "cool" or not? Is it that cool to be uncool? Or is this some inexplicable cultural phenomenon?
FWIW, I do both "cool" and "uncool" stuff, I care a little bit at times what people think, but not so much that I stop doing something I enjoy because of it. If something I do that people consider uncool suddenly becomes cool, GREAT! More people to enjoy it with! If something I do is cool and it becomes uncool, oh well, if I really enjoy it I'll keep doing it no matter what people think.
Am I just misunderstanding the whole thing?

HA! It's so funny that you mention Juno. I knew Kimya Dawson (as in actually had conversations with her, I didn't even know she was a musician at the time) before Juno was produced.
..... does that make me a hipster?

Reminds me of that South Park episode where they made up a dance crew because they got "served". They were looking for dancers and asked the goth kids, but they were like "No way man! We're non-conformists!" then the one kid was like "You know what? I'm such a non-conformist, that I'm not gonna conform to any of you guys. Okay, I'll do it."

The Filthy Critic summed up hipsters pretty well in his review of Juno.
