I have no idea what a hipster is and I'm British. Is it more of an American label? _________________ "Have no fear of perfection, you'll never reach it"

Reminds me of that South Park episode where they made up a dance crew because they got "served". They were looking for dancers and asked the goth kids, but they were like "No way man! We're non-conformists!" then the one kid was like "You know what? I'm such a non-conformist, that I'm not gonna conform to any of you guys. Okay, I'll do it." |
that part made me laugh really hard |

Apparently so.
Do you know anyone who frequently claims to be a fan of some obscure band, filmmaker, or author, and seems undeservedly proud of this?
Do you know anyone who does things "ironically," like wearing a poorly-trimmed beard, wearing an expensive pre-faded t-shirt with a logo of a band he or she doesn't even like, or doing things in general that are really stupid and annoying specifically because they're stupid and annoying?
Do you know anyone who, in general, seems desperate for you to think they're cool?
You should have at least some familiarity with these people. They're everywhere over here, and I envy you if they're not in Britain. |

i don't look down on hipsters any more than any other group. seems like it's "cooler" to put down hipsters than it is to BE a hipster in the first place. _________________ on a break, so if you need assistance please contact another moderator from this list:

The difference is, I genuinely dislike hipsters when I put them down. It if suddenly becomes "cool" to like them, I'll still consider them dipshits. |

i don't see how hipsters as a group are distinct from anyone else. people paint them like they are identical, but they are just like you... no better, no worse. _________________ on a break, so if you need assistance please contact another moderator from this list:

Hipsters think its important to let everyone know how expressive and special they are. I do whatever I can to avoid attention... I would say they are not "just like me" _________________ Opportunities multiply as they are seized. -Sun Tzu

not sure what that means. they may feel misunderstood, or they may like being different from the supposed norm, just like people who affiliate with any other fringe group. _________________ on a break, so if you need assistance please contact another moderator from this list:

I agree. That doesn't mean I can't dislike the general attitude associated with Hipsterdom. _________________ Do you bury me when I'm gone?

how do you know they want attention? they don't wear signs that indicate that. personally i don't even notice "hipsters" as compared to anyone else on the street. _________________ on a break, so if you need assistance please contact another moderator from this list:

From my experience, people like that (obviously not all or even most) tend to feed off the general dislike from other people. It's not unlike the emo experience in that respect.

I wonder if it isn't just the tragic effect of globalization...
People feel the need to be both "cool" and "original".
Nowadays, people are exposed to so much information via the world-wide-web and thousands of television channels. It's as if everything "cool" has become so popular that it's no longer considered "original", therefore, people are forced to decide which is more important to them. Being cool becomes unoriginal, and terms like "mainstream" are used in an almost derogatory sense, to describe things that are seen as cool but are fairly unoriginal. So hipsters are simply those for whom being original is more important than being cool, so they embrace the uncoolness of their originality, sometimes to such an extreme that they fear that doing anything "cool" makes them unoriginal. This explains the extreme clothing styles and interests better than anything else I can think of.
It takes a lot of talent and effort these days to be considered "cool" AND "original" for any length of time, because as soon as people see something they think is cool, they begin to imitate it. Even the biggest Hollywood stars are clamoring desperately for originality. Once they are imitated, they have to become more shocking, more extreme, or so it seems. I have nothing against originality, even in its extremes, but I do believe there is a difference between self-expression and attention-whoring.... but people can only know in their own hearts what their intentions are, so I try not to judge. _________________ The status is NOT quo!
