Alex, is there any chance I could perform?

Great initiative! Razz

I have a suggestion though. Don´t you think that it might be an idea to organize an asperger conference in America and another one in Europe? That would save an enormous amount of money for the European aspergers. Flying from Europe to the US is incredibly expensive at the moment.

This sounds awsome..I would definatly go. I have never been to Vegas or L.A so it would be a first for me. I dont mind paying for the air fare, but if we could get sponsors to pay for the lodgings that would be a huge plus.

Alex - just a sugestion (in case you hadn't thought of it but - you can hire university campus dorm blocks over the summer holiday period and make for very cheap accomodation. You could even use their facilities to host the conference!

As this is a big undertaking, it is enough to try and organize just one event. I would suggest that people in Europe, if there's enough interest, organize their own European event.

I thought that Alex was going to organize an international event. A conference that is going to be organized for USA citizens only can hardly be called international can it?

Wow, Wrong Planet seems to be receiving an awful lot of messages.

If you're open to suggestions, may I suggest having the initial event be a bit shorter than a week - maybe a weekend event (Friday night - Sunday)? The reason being that I can imagine many of us on the spectrum may not feel comfortable being away from home for an entire week - especially when we don't know what is in store. The smaller event will create a buzz when attendees enjoy themselves and share (on WrongPlanet and elsewhere) how awesome it was, creating momentum and anticipation for the next event, which could potentially b bigger and better each time (annual?!). :^)

Also, a week of accommodation fees can be pretty overwhelming, especially when one doesn't know what to expect from the event. Once buzz gets out, this shouldn't be an issue.

My other suggestion (and this is based on my humble opinion of course), is that instead of hosting the event in Vegas or Hollywood (which tend to be a bit dodgy/overwhelming for many of us on the spectrum) is to maybe host the event at a destination which has a variety of atmospheres - such as Santa Monica, CA. I know there is a Doubletree Hotel in Santa Monica which has reasonably priced rooms and conference rooms and is walking distance to the Pier/beach (for those needing to get away for a bit, play video games, etc.) and the 3rd Street Promenade (for dining, shopping, or movies). It's a very safe area for those that need to get out and walk and get away when need be and an easy trek from LAX for those flying in from out of the area.

Again, love the idea and am in full support!!! :^)

I like this post very much!

Aspie/ASDer or NOT, getting away from all the ruckus and goings-on is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT for me as it provides a means for me to clear my head and return to some sense of "normalcy" after being around noise and people for too long.

It is difficult for most people to understand just how and why I need this quiet time alone where I say little, if anything at all. Attempting to participate in an event with a lot of noise and activities causes my thinking to become garbled as I try to process what people are saying to me and navigate through the crowds - therefore, the way I react in these situations becomes impaired. If I'm in a place where I don't know the people, I become lost in the crowd and confloosterbated!

A few years ago, I went to a conference at the Lake of the Ozarks and was thrust into an environment where I didn't know a lot of people other than my co-workers. The resort was AMAZING with spectacular lake views and quiet places to sit and/or walk among the piers where people tied their yachts. Bliss.

Another conference I went to was full of people I knew but it was TOTAL SENSORY OVERLOAD meaning I could NOT enjoy the hospitality room or play cards very well. The hallways were VERY crowded and NOISY. The jamboree-style main session I attended found me standing up against the wall being completely mute! When it was time for me to yell and cheer I just stood there - I was actively observing, but COMPLETELY MUTE! And THIS was among people I actually KNEW!

I think a WP conference would be nice, but it MUST include GETAWAY TIME for attendees in appropriate places.

If you held it in New Orleans, there is always the terrace area at the Riverwalk Mall leading to the Julia Street Cruise Ship Terminal with views of the river and any of the megaships that dock there!

Peaceful Cool

I am from The Netherlands and visiting New Orleans is one of my dreams but I can't afford it unfortunately.
I am totally fascinated by Cajun Creole music, the quisine of Louisiana (gumbo among other things) and the historical aspects of New Orleans, especially the history of les gens couleurs libres.

I can't second (or third, or forth) these sentiments more heartily: NOT having the event in a big hotel or Las Vegas. I have been to LV. No place in the world (and I've traveled a quite a bit) is more antithetical, IMHO, to Aspergian needs and values than LV. Garish, plastic, phony, crawling with NT types engaged in their bizarre social interactions. Maybe DisneyWorld on the forth of July would be worse. Maybe not.

I posted this once before, (and won't do so again, promise) but ASILOMAR CONFRENCE CENTER in Pacific Grove CA. It is quiet, lots of lovely outdoor space, big and small meeting rooms, close to the ocean, INEXPENSIVE, located on central coast of CA. You can find it on Google.

I just googled it..its next to Monterey? It sounds and looks great but the problem becomes logistics....how does someone like me who lives in New Jersey get a flight there? Would I have to fly to San Francisco or San Jose and than what? it seems to be somewhat out of the way and hard to reach for people not in the vicinity.

It would be so cool if this actually happened... But unless the travel-expenses are paid I can't go... Alex, you know how much money it takes to get from Denmark to USA... :/ But of course, if I win the lottery or suddenly somehow get rich, I'm there... xD

Haven't read the whole thread (20 pages? O_O) but I read the first page and I really believe this could work... In exchange for a ticket to and from USA I would definitely help arrange it...?

Yes, it is near Monterey and there are bus shuttles from SF and SJ airports straight to Asilomar. There is high speed internet in all the rooms and contractors available to set up all the high tech stuff for the group events. And lots of cozy little motels a few blocks away that also cater to people who are attending conferences there. It is a fantastic place, 107 acre State Park facility built at the turn of the century by YWCA. Catered dining is available in the dining hall and since it is "the granola belt" you can get foods that are actually healthy and good! I attended a conference there some years ago and know it first hand. It would be very comfortable for the likes of us. If the conference is going to be in CA, it is in the center of the State and on the ocean. The beach is part of the place! If you are involved in the planning of this event PLEASE check out this location. We would have better attendance and a happier outcome if it's held at Asilomar, IMHO.
