I think Roger Ebert explained it best:

I'm hoping this year will be a lot more better.

The current crop of Hollywood movies (the ones I saw in 2011) are derivative, formulaic, or both, and not worth the price of admission (in my opinion).

While the prices of concessions don't effect me much (with special cups and a shirt, I can get two drinks and a popcorn for just $2), I agree that theaters need to reevaluate their priorities when it comes to their selection of films and how they rotate them out for newer films even if the newer films are inferior. And don't get me started on 3D films. It's bad enough the 16 screen theater near me burns up 10 of their screens for 5 bad 3D films plus their 2D versions.

The main reasons why no one's going to see movies? They all suck.

That's funny; for me, 2011 was the biggest movie-going year since the mid-80s, mostly because of the nostalgia appeal of "TRON: Legacy", "X-Men: First Class" (the first movie since "Aliens" that I went to see three times in a row), "Super 8", "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" and "The Lion King".

My list:

- Being very sensitive to sensory input, I find having to spend 2 hours in a room with 50+ people to be auditory torture.

- I can download an RS rip the day after the movie opens and watch it in the comfort of my own living room, having what snacks I desire and with the company I chose or no company at all. I can also pause the film whenever I want.

- There is no reason to go to the theater when you have a 40+ inch screen with surround sound at home. It used to be that movies like "Transformers" were "theater movies" because of their better sound systems and visuals, not so much anymore.

- 3D, come on! I do find it amusing that so many 1 dimensional movies are done in 3D. Although, it may be logical that if you have a 1 dimensional plot and 2 dimensional actors, you do get a 3D film.

- Having to leave my house.

First, we don't really represent the majority. Your sensory problems mean you'd never be inclined to see a film in theater even if it was still as popular as it may have been.

Second, that's stealing :O

Third, there's more to it than better sound and visuals. For me movies still have this but obviously the gap between cinema and home movies is narrowing. Going to the movies is also a social thing. That's a pretty big draw for a lot of people. I mean I couldn't imagine too many people going to see them on their own.

Fourth, was 3D ever that popular? Maybe as a gimmick. Not so much any more I would think.

That is EXACTLY how I feel. Only difference is I usually wait ´til the movie´s out on dvd.
Last year I went to the movies four times though, mainly as a social thing. Every time it felt more like I endured the movie than enjoying it, for all the reasons you´ve pointed out.

I do go to the movies as a social thing, I just make sure that its off peak hours or in a less popular theater. I tend to buy the DVDs for both movies and the TV-shows I download when they come out, but I'm too impatient to wait for that most of the time. The social thing is why I occasionally go to the movies, but with the right setup in your living room having people over is a suitable replacement. The last couple of years or so the whole "3D" thing, seemed to be a crutch for crappy films. You can always tell when somethings a gimmick when George Lucas redoes the Star Wars movies using it to cash in again.

I have no problem with downloading movies or tv shows and not paying. Don't have to justify it to me.

To both storm and TM.

Movie cost a lot to be made(even the weak ones. If people download one the good ones and pay to see the bad ones which do you think they will make more of? Reason people download is because movies cost to much. They cost to much because people are downloading them for free and they raise the price. They raise the price people download.

3D is not a cruch but costly so something needs to by cut. Sometimes actors and others story. 3D is very nice when used right. But since half the of the 3d movies out now were either made 2d and had 3d slashed into it(making the 3d look bad) or great 3d but bad plots.
