When I saw this, I was shocked and upset about what happened to these Buddhas from the Maldives. The Maldives used to be buddhist until it became Muslim in AD 1153. During the Maldivian coup recently, Wahabi Kharijite Extremists destroyed the entire collection of Maldivian buddhist statues. This was very similar to the destruction of the Buddhas of Bamiyan in Afghanistan by the Taliban. Many moderate muslims condemed this like the Muslim Governer of the western province of Sri Lanka, Alavi Moulana. Because of this, we have lost a heritage that was an epitone of Maldivian culture. I think that it's very silly to say that these people aren't Muslims. There is a very old tradition of Muslims destroying what they regard as idols, beginning with Mohammed himself!
In Islam, shirk is the only crime that God cannot forgive. Shirk is the worship or deification of anything other than God.
There is an urge in any religion to see other religions as worthless and dangerous. And so there should be! After all, those religions are wrong!

Just remember, it's only a few Muslims who have these views and commit these atrocities.
And most of the other Muslims keep their heads down and their mouths shut. Which is why the extremists can get away with what they get away with. Very few Muslims protest the extremists loudly and publicly. Which is why we did NOT have a Million American Muslim March against religious fanaticism following 9/11.

Stop being Islamophobic. A well known Sufi Muslim scholor called Dr Tahir Ul Qadri has issued a 512-page fatwa on Terrorism in 2010. this Fatwa prooves that terrorism is against the teachings of Islam. He recently came to Wembley stadium on September 2011 for the Peace for Humanity Conference. Tahir Ul Qadri belongs to a peaceful and tolerant branch of Islam called Sufism. No Terrorists are Sufis.

Indeed. There are small groups here in the UK, like the British Muslims for Secular Democracy, that have taken part in anti-Sharia protests but they are completely unheard of amongst the general public.

These people who did this were Muslims. The vast majority of Muslims would not do what these guys did... but they are still Muslims. Islam does need to secularise itself, like Christianity had to. At the moment it is threatening and we don't like it.
