I'm a Mormon and I would like your opinions on this subject.

I had to laugh at that. I love how it's called "Magic Underpants." I'm still trying to get a pair of my own.

Honestly, I don't think much about the Church of Ladder-Day Saints except insofar as it happens to be a particularly large and well-funded religious body. Like many Christian churches, it has policies that I vehemently disagree with, beliefs I find confusing, and an annoying habit to show up at my front door while I'm attempting to relax and/or do house chores. So aside from its level of organization leading to it coming up during tangentially-related political arguments (and a tendency for the public figures to seemingly disapprove of the separation of church and state, a line of thought I find distasteful and dangerous), it's more-or-less like the Baptist church across the street - a group of people I've got nothing in common with.

My Mum left the LDS because she couldn't believe that bit. And she wanted to get drunk.

I once got a call from a Mormon organization asking me what negative ideas I had about the Mormon faith. I told the guy that I was uncomfortable with the question. When he persisted, I finally hung up on him. I'm also getting the same sort of vibe from this thread. Is this masochistic tendency common with Mormons?

I find it to be intellectually insulting on a lot of levels. Especially towards Amerindian/Mesoamerican cultures. Joseph Smith truly was a man of his day and his views on the Amerindians is evident of that. Claiming it was white people who built the great Mesoamerican megaliths is due to the deeply condescending racism exhibited towards those considered "lesser peoples".

I also do not consider the Book of Mormon to really preach peace and tolerance, when you consider passages like this:

Joseph Smith wrote:
"My object in going to inquire of the Lord was to know which of all the sects was right, that I might know which to join. No sooner, therefore, did I get possession of myself, so as to be able to speak, than I asked the personages who stood above me in the light, which of all the sects was right — and which I should join. I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong, and the personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in His sight: that those professors were all corrupt . . ."

I have a problem with most of the big money organized religions selling a bill of goods and saying they all know the truth and they really don't and being used as a shield to people who actually in their own opinion hate something and use religion as a shield to get away with the hatred.

Thoughts on the Mormon Church?

  • Historically racist views about Africans are f*cking disgraceful.
  • Posthumous baptisms - especially of Holocaust victims - unforgivable.
  • Opposition to same-sex marriage also pretty awful.

^^^This.

Plus, according to the Book of Mormon, black skin was god's punishment for evil people. Smith described white skin as "fair and delightsome" and black skin as "loathsome" (2 Nephi 5:21).

In my opinion, all theistic religions are nonsense. But some are more nonsensical than others, not to mention more offensive.

I was under the impression that black skin was a "curse" for being neutral in the celestial battle between Mormon Jesus and Lucifer. :/ That the "evil" ones were cursed to be demons who could not possess bodies of their own

Today, it's so called documentaries on UFO's and ancient astronauts that maintain that it was aliens who build Meso-American monuments. Sure, white men are no longer credited, but the indigenous population are still seen as too inferior to have created such amazing works.
