Anyone read the books?
I´m just curious to know if reading them might be worthwhile.

Guess, I´ll answer this myself since I just finished reading the first book.
It was quite good (as far as crime/mystery fiction goes, it´s not my favourite choise of genre), although knowing what´s going to happen takes some of the fun out of it.
There are some differences but overall the tv series is a very faithful adaptation. The monologues in Dexter´s mind are pretty much lifted directly from the book, so that might give you an idea of how it is written.
If what I´ve heard is true the other books take a different route than the tv sequels, so I just might give it a try.
Before that I think I´ll check out season 6.

To clarify, the tv is a generally faithful adaptation up until the end of the first book. From there they basically part ways.

TBH I think the books nowadays are a waste of time. They are obviously rushed compared to the older ones, and the writer has a habbit of not only introducing the supernatural into his stories, but also making Cody and Astor (the less-than-ten year old children) save the day. Avoid!

Yikes! That sounds real bad. Thanks for the warning.

Season 4 - John Lithgow (the antagonist/The Trinity Killer). Amazing actor.

Lithgow is very good. I also liked that season.

I love Dexter - though I've only seen what's availble on Netflix so far.

My friend read the books, and said it was a rare case where the TV show was actually better than the books! Shocked

I like it, but the last few seasons have been a bit of a mixed bag. The first two seasons and season four were brilliant though.

you don't like season 3?

No. It wasn't terrible, and it had it's moments, but it was a letdown compared to the two prior seasons.

The last season came dangerously close to jumping the shark, but thankfully didn't at the very end.

I've been watching since it began and I currently feel that I'm watching it out of loyalty, given I've watched it all so far.
The whole talking to his dad thing is starting to wear a little thin with me.

Same here...especially Season 1. All that talk about wanting to be alone, about not understanding social code, having to pretend to be as polite and normal as possible in order to fit in, etc. It mirrored my inner dialogue to some extent (except for the killing part.) After that first season, I was hooked. One of the best shows on TV.

I love Dexter! I agree that seasons 1,2, and 4 are likely the better ones, but even the others are pretty good. (I actually really liked season 6, but judging by the other comments I think I'm in the minority.)

It's definitely worth it to keep watching though, in my opinion.

One of the best shows on television, alongside Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead.

However, it seems to be going downhill... I hope next season is better than the last.

they are great, and have a lot less drama. its the real dexter, I love the actor but not what has been done with the show its not close enough to the source. everything after the second season has nothing to do with the book anymore.
