No big deal. It was more like a solar fizzle.

I'm going to turn on my radio just to hear the interruption. Now that is novelty! _________________ Opportunities multiply as they are seized. -Sun Tzu

I think that it would be very unlikely that a pulse of gamma rays would be able to wipe out the whole world. While standing behind a object from an intense gamma source such as an atom bomb will not fully protect you as gamma photons will compton scatter off atoms in the air.
But for the gamma rays to compton scatter their way to the far side of the earth off air and stones would be rather far fetched. So I do not think that a gamma ray pulse would fry us all, it might cause some changes in the air. I know that if you irradate air with gamma rays that you form nitric acid and nitrogen oxides. So we might get some dire acid rain and a problem with the ozone layer after a strong gamma pulse. _________________ Health is a state of physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity I am not a jigsaw, I am a free man ! |

My radio was going in and out yesterday, but who knows if it had to do with the flare or not. Come to think about it, I think I was listening to Rush Limbaugh and it was going out during the commercials |

If you tune your radio between stations you can hear plenty of solar radiation in the static. Of course off-tuning is not so easy in this day of digital radios.
