I saw a billboard advertising this programme, which is due to start on Tuesday 3rd April at 9pm, on Channel 4. It might be worth a look. The first episode features a guy with Aspergers.

I will wach it, but Channel 4 are exploitative *edit*.
Constantly producing shows that are supposed to be compassionate, when they know that a large portion of the audience are tuning in for LOLs. It's a no-lose situation for them.

no doubt he will be made out to be an idiot and will then just "magically" change his ways by the end of the programme

I don't like how Asperger's is being considered the same as having a deformed head.

Agreed. I think I shall give this a wide berth too.

I think treating people with Asperger's as "undateable" is very callous.

I hope you all don't think I've posted this because I agree with the premise. I think it might be an interesting watch, even for the sake of giving people the ammo to criticise sensationalist TV shows. I found the name of the show quite disturbing and presumptive too.

Not that I'm aware of. I came across this http://samedifference1.com/2012/03/18/the-undateables. It seems like the series has an unfortunate title more than anything else, but we shall see.

Will be interested to watch it, although I suspect it will be yet another "freak show". I find the implications of the title somewhat disturbing but feel it necessary to watch such things in their entirety if I am to have an opinion (or make a complaint) at a later date.

That's exactly what it's going to be, a "freak show". I've already seen the trailer for this programme. It looks so bad.

It's merely for people to gawk at those that are more unfortunate in some areas of life than themselves.

It's a modern-day equivalent of the sideshow. Here in Britain we love these kinds of things. Programmes like X factor for example, which for the most part is laughing at people who can't sing, and then they throw in a few heart-rending cases to show they have "compassion" (e.g. Susan Boyle). It's a sideshow behind the facade of a "talent show". Most people watch it for the drama and to see people embarrass themselves.

I guess you can look at a programme like that as being rather innocuous, as the participants willingly choose to be on there. I call it exploitation.

A programme like this is to satisfy the masses' appetite for viewing people that are deemed "weird, peculiar, ugly and different".

This programme shouldn't be aired. Thumb down

Aspergers itself probably isn't why they picked him as "undatable". It's probably because he's got the thing about having to live in a certain radius and won't eat on a date. Also, don't shows like that ask for submissions for people to be on them? Either he submitted himself or someone submitted him and he agreed to do it.

Shows like that do tend to focus on either the more extreme or oddest of whatever group they are targeting. If the guy was "undatable" because he was always either at the gym working out, or drinking beer with his friends while yelling at a football game on tv, and because he was an egostistic jock, people wouldn't complain, most would agree it's probably true. Because they said he has AS (or really they could have said he had anything - OCD, an anxiety disorder, etc) people kind of perceive it as them picking on someobody for something they can't help, so the producers look bad.

The guy probably already knows his requirements are at least "odd", and without knowing what the show is really about, or knowing more about the people who make (and are guests on) the show, it's hard to say if it's really exploitive or not.

If you ask nicely I may just upload a copy here if you really want to see it. Wink
