Does anyone have any theories? The melting ice theory doesn't make sense to me as the frost doesn't go that deep at this latitude, a couple meters at best, probably less than a meter this winter. There's no frost left in the ground at this point anyways. It was 85 degrees today and it's been way above freezing for more than a week now.

I've always enjoyed amusing myself with frightening outlandish thoughts. They really should send Fox Moulder in to dig for the hidden mothership.

Saw something on TV about this.

Reminds me of this:

Apparently this phenomena occurs other places throughout the world. I'm guessing they are like very small earthquakes that happen to make a loud noise because they are right at the surface rather than deep down like normal earthquakes.

It could be that there are natural cracks/faults in the granite bedrock that slowly open up due to geologic processes and allow ground water in. If the water pressure suddenly changes due to a minor earthquake from deeper down in the crust (which probably doesn't cause a sound at the surface and might be too small to even feel), these cracks might collapse causing a very loud noise. Similar noises, like fireworks or thundering mortar booms, can be heard in thick melting glaciers where the ice is settling and water underneath is on the move.

Dont believe the earthquake explanation...its alien pods bursting open and its a government cover up to prevent mass hysteria. JK

Apparently NOAA has detected the ghastly utterances of Cthulhu ushering from the depths of the Pacific.

We should be thankful that the language of the message is impossible for any mere mortals to translate. Any human being with the capacity to comprehend such great evil will certainly fall into demonic madness.

This has been explained. Earthquakes. They are loud and don't shake the ground much due to a unique geological composition under that town.

When I first heard of this I thought it must be sonic booms. But there aren't any military airfields nearby, or any high speed corridors.

Nature is weird, and it makes weird ass noises.

The Bloop and Slowdown definitely so. Slowdown has been explained I believe, but The Bloop is still from an unknown source. It's neat.

A few years ago a disturbing, low buzz was heard in a large part of a city near me.
Not sure what it turned out to be, but it's gone.

Additionally, there's a region here that used to have a supply of natural gas.
Most of it was removed, so there have been some earthquakes there. Hardly something to worry about, but earthquakes nonetheless.

Has the "Bloop" been detected since 1997, or was it a one time event? It doesn't seem likely to me that it was caused by a living organism if it hasn't been detected since 1997.

I just find it funny how everyone started making the connection to the 1926 short story by HP Lovecraft because the purported origin of the noise is within 500 miles of where the fictional "sunken city" of R'lyeh was located in the story.

Not sure to be honest.

The weird thing is, the sound is as far as we can tell made by a creature. Which is decidedly f****d up.

I've only felt an earthquake once while in Central America. It was a magnitude five point something. I was in my hotel room on the 4th floor when the vent on the wall started rattling. Then I felt a couple hard thumps/shudders. There was no sound coming from the ground itself, only the building rattling/creaking. After that it was completely silent except the blinds began swinging on their own. I was just thinking WTF? It didn't dawn on me that it was an earthquake until I stood up. Then I could feel that the whole building was rythmically swaying. The rattle lasted about 5 seconds and the swaying was an additional 12 seconds or so. It was creepy.

Supply and demand. If one is willing to walk or ride a bike gasoline won't cost him a cent.
