I mention my interest is if there is a major wreck or death. Dad said I need to stop talking about death but IMO it's a logical possibility with the speed they are going and other racers have lost there lives. IMO there's nothing like seeing a major wreck in a race and find out wow that person died (as they replay it over and over.) Sure death is sad and I don't "Wish" for a race car driver to die but as a logical possibility my mind does go there.  So? Anyone else like Nascar for the wrecks and possible deaths? |

I watch it fairly often; this surprises a lot of people. I like cars, although they're not enough of an interest that I'm particularly knowledgable. I can't say I watch waiting for wrecks or death, but the wrecks can be fun if no one is hurt. I do understand the morbid interest, though. I think it's part of why I like horror movies-especially the more realistic ones. Watch open wheel racing (Indy Car, Formula One). The speeds are much greater and the chance of horrific collisions increased

I know next to nothing about cars, so I don't watch Nascar at all. I've acquaintances who love it, but I don't understand it at all.

I've been watching Nascar since I was 5. My earliest memory of the 19 Daytona 500 was Dale Jarrett winning with his father cheering him on in the announcers booth in 1993. I also remember when Dale Earnhardt won the Daytona 500 and every one in the pits lined up to give him high five as he drove down pit road, pretty inspiring moment. Sadly I do remember when he died in 2001, which was a huge shock to me.
I pretty much love all forms of Auto Racing, (F1, Touring Car, Rally, Dakar, Le Mans, etc). This is my 25th year of auto racing being my favorite sport. I have had a passion for it since i was 2.
I do not watch because of the crashes, i watch because of the Intense battles, lead changes, and fighting for position in the point series.
I think it's cool that the Daytona 500 got some pretty sweet ratings this Monday, maybe they will think about going to prime-time more often, but that would be hard because if there is a rain delay, that might cause some trouble, they would have to figure out a way to get around that. There was also a lot of tweeting going on during the fire and the race. One racer tweeted a picture inside his car, which is unsual if you ask me but I guess that gave them some good rating, i would however suggest not doing it again.
Anyway, I will continue to watch stock car racing til the end, until they come up with a new series. To me, if it's got wheels and a engine (or electric motor or hydrogen. solar, whatever) , it gets my blood moving. |

I love nascar. Mark Martin is my driver. Its the only sport I can get into because its something I can relate to. It takes real skill to drive cars at those speed and not get into each other.
I was at New Hampshire speedway when Kenny Irwin crashed and passed. I saw the whole thing.

While the crashes can be fun to watch, I would be very sad if any of the drivers I have enjoyed watching were hurt or killed. When I first watched the footage of Dan Wheldon's crash, I thought it was so cool. But when I found out that he died and I thought about watching interviews he did and what a nice guy he seemed to be and that he had small children, it really made me sad.

Are you kidding? I live in Alabama! Of course I watch Nascar, but it's not by choice. My husband and my daughters fiance watch it. I remember watching it live when Dale Ernhardt got killed. A tornado had caused some trees to fall in our neighborhood (we still lived in the city then) and our lights were out so we were staying at a hotel. All 6 of us in one room. My husband, me, and our four kids. We were watching the race when it happened. My daughter had found an Irish whistle in the room somewhere that the maid hadn't seen it and had been playing it and my husband made her stop and we all watched the coverage.
Also, I remember when Davey Allison died. I was at the IRS building, and we were getting audited. I was pregnant with one of the kids at the time, but don't remember which. They had some soft music on the overhead radio and they changed it to news and somebody came in the office and made the announcement. Everybody got even quieter and they kept it on the news channel for the rest of the time I was there. The guy who was auditing me stopped to listen to it and then had to take a break and go out to smoke. I used his phone and called my husband to tell him what happened.

I guess my roots goes a little deeper, since my family was involved in racing for a couple of years and I was involved in racing for a couple of years.
I actually lived for a time in Mooresville and worked in the racing industry.
The gory truth is that many people who watches the races, only watches to see the wrecks.
Racing is a sport, the television aspect is a show.
You have to establish a certain amount of drama in order to get people to watch.
The television people now pays the money that the car manufacturers and the parts business once provided in order for the sport to exist.
Come to think of it - when was the last time you saw someone purchase a can of STP motor oil additive or even knew what STP is a acronym for> without having to look it up on the internet.
I stopped watching for a time due to the fact that Dumb old Darrell and his kid brother Mikey dummified it to the point of where it was attractive to women and children, while ignoring the fan base - old time Nascar fans.
I'm never going to drink wine with my meals, nor am I going to visit Applebee's no matter how many times they advertise per a event.
I will always be suspect when the people who sponsors the race has the winning race car.
The good old days are gone now and they will never return.
There will never be another Richard Petty, Cale Yarlboro, Dale Earnhardt Sr. , Buddy Baker, Ned Jarrett, Tim Flock, Junior Johnson...
Today we are told who to root for and which manufacturer is acceptable - even though they are not a US Owned corporation and their factory production cars do not fit the template.
It will never be man against man and machine against machine and run what you brung and hope you brought enough! |

Your insinuation that NASCAR needs to be simplified for women to understand it is pretty insulting. Hell, it's even insulting to the children to say it needs to be simplified for them. It's cars turning left going around an oval. It's not that complicated. And I guarantee you that 90% of your "good ol' boy" fan base doesn't understand the actual mechanics of racing any better than their wives and children, so don't make it about that. That said, I have enjoyed auto racing of all kinds since I was a little girl, and watched many of the great drivers you listed. And no, it will never be the same.

It's more complicated than it looks. The sport itself focuses heavily on drafting and overtaking--which demands a lot from the driver. Furthermore, a stock car behaves differently than a regular car because of the asymmetrical configuration of the running gear (which is why you always see the drivers struggling to regain control after a wheelspin or a drift). |

Oh, I know that driving the cars competitively is more complicated than that. But understanding the basic ideas and strategies of racing and how the cars work and respond is not.
