Oh dear... a public holiday for extreme S&M and edgeplay enthusiasts Shocked Fun for the whole family. Well, if people get off on that, why not? I just wish they'd do this in the privacy of their bedrooms, dark rooms, dungeons and monasteries.

It's all voluntary. Why do you care if they decide they want to be nailed to a cross?

Because it's a public display of torture. Not that I have anything against consensual torture play. I'm not into it myself, but I think people should do whatever makes them happy as long as all parties consent and nobody is maimed or killed in the process. But is it really necessary to do it in public? I'm really not a prude, but I find this as obscene as an orgy in the streets in broad daylight. There are dedicated places for this kind of thing, such as BDSM clubs.

I'm also a bit offended by realistic statues of the crucified Jesus in public places. In some parts of Southern Germany, there are wooden tortured Jesuses at every other street corner, complete with painted blood on the face and extremities. People walk past these displays of pain, death and torture with their infant children and think nothing about it. Just imagine it would be an impaled statue, or a statue of someone burning at the stake. A crucifixion display, one of the cruelest execution methods that was ever invented, is in equally bad taste imho. If people want to worship this kind of torture in churches, I have nothing against it, but please keep it out of the public sphere.

Well I have to point out something, the nailing of Jesus to a cross was not an attempt to obtain sexual enjoyment by anyone. To equate the death of Jesus on a cross to S&M sex games is deeply offensive to many people. Even while I do not believe in God I think that such a remark is deeply wrong.

I would however point out that even if the people are being nailed to crosses for what they think are noble reasons, I see a danger that they are trying to become equal to Jesus Christ.

I think these people in the Philippines are missing the point. Since Jesus did it, no one has to do it again.

It is all about suffering. Some people think that it is virtuous to suffer.

I guess I'm not virtuous, then. Laughing

That's true, some people feel that by allowing themselves to go through suffering brings them closer to Jesus in a spiritual way. Flagellants have existed for centuries, especially during the Middle Ages, but it's a more recent thing to have people who are willing to be crucified.

If I live to be 200 (G-D forbid!) I will never understand how the gentiles think. Gentile brains and Jewish brains have distinct operating systems.

Not really. People flagellating themselves, and allowing themselves to be crucified, is just as incomprehensible to me, as it is to most Gentiles.
Protestants threw that foolishness out over five hundred years ago.

I was stationed in the Philippines in the late '80's. At the time I was a practising Catholic. When I witnessed this BLASPHEMOUS BARBARISM, I went to the RC Chaplain. He tried to fob it off as a "cultural thing". BS was my reply & I quit being a RC right then & there.

Since then the whole Priest sex abuse scandal broke & all the other "problems" I have NOT regretted my decision by one iota. The ONLY reason I have not submitted my "defection from the Catholic church" is because my Mom is still alive & I don't want to "hurt" her. Once she does pass away, I will be giving that instrument to the Priest (possibly even on the same day as her funeral, who knows?)
