I think it's best to like a mixture of mainstream and underground bands, but not let other coerce you into liking said mainstream bands. My social links are bands like metallica (Black album/Load/Reload), Linkin Park, All That Remains and Machine Head.

Anyone else have bands that double as social links?

Many mainstream bands are trash of course, but some good bands get attention they deserve, like Rise Against.

Yeah, I have more Manic Street Preachers fans connections than connections from any other group of people. A lot of times I don't even remember that's how I know all those people. Laughing

Half of the time my taste in music isolates me, and other times it doen't. Most of the time I listen to mainstream music, but mostly hip hop, R&B, and rap. But at the same time I can't help but listen to the Jonas Brothers (yeah I'm still a little 10-year-old at heart), *NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, New Kids On The Block, TLC, Foreigner, Metallica, Nickelback, No Doubt, Michael Jackson, Aerosmith, 3 Doors Down, Godsmack, Panic! At The Disco, Puddle oF Mudd, Play, Selena Gomez, Marc Anthony, Disturbed, Blink 182, Hollywood Undead, Daddy Yankee, Colbie Caillat, Big Time Rush, and Lonely Island. Now that I think about it, I think I like more non-mainstream music than actual mainstream music haaha Laughing

Maybe mine does to an extent but at the same time, I don't really care.

Most of the time when I say Joy Division people are like "who is that". Sad Perhaps I would have better luck in Britain.

I listen almost exclusively to classical music, so my peers tell me that I'm "weird."

The weirder parts of my musical tastes however are being somewhat obsessed with national anthems and European marches.

The US. If Ian didn't kill himself before the US tour, this might be a different story.

Apparently my taste for folk, bluegrass, and Earl Scruggs in particular isolates me too... Laughing

I had one person I knew because of them....but not really. Some Manic Street Preachers fans are pretty obsessive, so if it's one of your obsessions it's easier to make a connection (although....I guess living in the UK and especially in Wales is a plus for that sort of connections).

I'm not really sure....people don't put music that much to the front when socialising. If anything the lack of in-depth interest in music rather than my actual taste can be isolating since it alienates other people from talking to you. I often get weird looks when I want to talk about music unless this persons happens to like music in a substantial way.
E.g. I do know people who compliment me for my taste in music but that doesn't lead to anything else. Nothing negative or positive happens (at least not something which is noticeable enough) which could be traced back to my taste in music.

I would say I don't care but it's not true. It's simply that I don't think that people put that much weight into music most of the time. It's not important enough.

I dont care if people dont like what I like, and I mostly find something in common with everybody, which probably means my taste of music does not isolate me.

Yes and no. I can listen to almost anything, as long as someone's using an intelligent finger on the volume control.

Then again, some of the artists I love make people want to leave the room. Make that the building.

Also, I'm tone deaf and can't carry a tune or stay on key. And I LOVE to sing.
