I realize that language constantly evolves and even what is seen as correct now was not correct 100 years ago or whatever... but I personally HATE the amending/changing of word meanings based on popular usage and the adding of new words to the dictionary just because people say them. Blech.

On topic: All apostophe offenders must die.

Sincerely,

Grammar Nazi

Pretty sure he did that on purpose.

P.S. Any grammar nazis or people who understand correct punctuation may be entertained by the facebook group called "Unnecessary" Quotation Marks. <- Link to picture blog

From perusing the pictures posted there, it seems like it is starting to become common usage for people to put quotation marks around things for emphasis. But really what it does is change the meaning of the sentance completely and its often pretty hilarious. For example, thir header sign on Facebook that says Fresh "Eggs"
lmaolmao

First picture on this page is a prime example of both grammar abominations. Haha!

Then you have the opposite case, where apostrophes are omitted, and I find that looks far more common. Instead of I'm, I've, I'll and I'd, people type Im, Ive, Ill and Id. Or even im, ive, ill and id.

These very contractions always have personal, unique, idiosyncratic uses by individual people. First thing at work this morning, there was an example I'd never seen before. A note was in my pigeon hole, where the first word was I've. This time it was handwritten, but the v and e were superscripts (miniscule letters above/to the right as often seen in 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc.), with no apostrophe.

I guess language use evolves to suit how we communicate - for example, most people now use shortened forms etc for texts. A whole range of terms eg lol, imho and so on, are common in texts & on the internet, they've virtually become an accepted part of our vocabulary.

In terms of punctuation, a similar thing seems to have happened. The apostrophe gets dropped in texts etc and then this happens in formal writing too. The lack of a capital for I always bothers me, and my own pet hate is ive, im etc in texts.

Yeah I know... it was pretty unusual, and I had a mild WTF reaction to it too if I'm honest.

Anyone ever read a book by Cormac McCarthy? He never uses apostrophes or quotes. His dialogue scenes look like this:

I dont have an actual quote from one of his books, Jory said. So Im making up this hypothetical example. It gets the point across, doesnt it?
