| I feel really really really really really really sick many times a day. Someone is accessing my email, I keep getting alerts about it at odd times, but this should not be happening because I secured my account by their process as they told me to do (twice), and the glitches that would be causing this such as me accessing it on another computer, mobile or not, are not happening. I am sick to death, I think someone is trying to make me crazy and I know someone who would do this and has done things like this. What am I supposed to do. I made new accounts but I fear my whole computer has been hacked using any of the programs available to amateur-on-up hackers on hacking instructional sites. I am keeping the old account to try to get more information as this is where the alerts of unauthorized access are occurring frequently. |

| Please please help. I am panicking and I have suicidal thoughts about this because if this is being done to me it's cruel and I am really depressed that someone would do this to me, and if they aren't then I should just kill myself because I'm insane. Please please please help. |

I don't think you should kill yourself under any circumstances. I get weird alerts on my computer from time to time as well.
What type of email service do you use? Are the alerts actually sent to you through email? |

It's a yellow box that says something like "Please refresh your browser. When you access your account from more than one computer we ask that you sign in again to ensure security."
It used to be a slightly different message that contained the phrase "unauthorized access" from another device.
I followed what their online support staff told me to do to secure my account TWO times in a row a few weeks ago, because I was still getting the alerts after securing it the first time, and I'm still getting alerts now, and the support staff haven't responded to me in days.
Someone I know hacks people and I know this could be done to me out of cruelty but they made me feel insane for telling them I thought they did it even though they don't see a hacking that is a recognized event is morally wrong or major. They made me feel insane, guilty, manipulative, and they made this characterization of me angrily as if I didn't have a reason to suspect them. I want to kill myself, I am having frequent panic attacks over this. Why am I still getting these alerts, and why am I made to feel wrong for suspecting someone who does things like this for fun? |

Anything is possible. Someone who is immoral blatantly with one thing, might not do the moral thing in a different situation such as admit to hacking you, apologize for it and make amends. So thats not to say this person isn't responsible.
But, unfortunately other possibilities still exist. There are a ton of hackers, phishers, viruses, etc. Then there's the possibility that its not a hacking at all but a technicical issue. The latter which happens to me all the time can make you feel like you're going batshit crazy.
I remember getting a email saying I had ordered something off of ebay. Then I found out this email was something called a phishing attempt where people send you to a fake site in order to get personal information from you. Was a HUGE relief. I thought I was hacked because I had a virus on my computer. I was not hacked at all.
I'll say this, the person who you know is a hacker.. is unlikely the person responsible in my opinion (unless they're insane). Only because since they told you they hack, you could actually take action against them.
Sorry you're having a hard time. |

Thank you but I actually had a police officer come to my house when comcast told me I had to call police to find out what this IP number that showed up on my hotmail log, a private comcast customer in Massachusetts, was doing accessing my account last summer, and the police told me that they can't take action unless the person stole money for me or some other illegal action on top of hacking, which is counter to what I thought I knew which is that hacking itself is illegal.
This person wanted to get caught when they hacked another person, for notoriety, I don't see why it's unreasonable for me to think they would do the same to me.
This person displays personality disordered traits, so while I wouldn't use the term insane for them or anyone, I know that me knowing they hack would not be enough to stop them from doing this. I just don't know if they did do it.
Thank you for your help and support, I appreciate it. |

First off you are not insane and don't kill yourself! Why would you kill yourself over someone else being bad? Now, to the problem:
1. Down load and use at least one free anti virus/anti malware program like AVG. If you don't want that one go to KimKomando.com to see what program she recommends. She is a computer and electronics geek with her own national radio show and web site. She helps people with their computer and electronics problems. If she doesn't know the answer to a person's problem, she can find out.
2. Once you have cleaned the bad stuff off your PC, down load and use an encryption program. KimKomando.com may have a link to one of those, too.
3. If you have WiFi, make sure that is also secured with a pass word. I don't know if it can also be encrypted. If so, do so.
4. Change to a different email service provider, or at least get a secondary account with a different one. I've had several over the years, and am currently on a second go-round with Yahoo--had 'em for several years, dropped 'em due to problems for several years, had a problem with the one after Yahoo after several years, checked out Yahoo along with others again, and came back. I can't remember all the ones I've tried, but some were Hotmail, Gmail, and one I liked a lot until they made some changes was MyWay.com. I suggest checking out several different free ones to find one that will suit you.
5. Always have at least 2 email accounts. One for family and friends, and one for other stuff. Unfortunately, I didn't start out that way. I have one main one for family, friends, newsletters, some commercial contacts, and some other stuff. I have another one I use for research and some commercial stuff. I have a third one with a small capacity that came with my ISP account, which I use as an emergency back up for my family contacts. I used to get less spam, but lately my main account has been getting a lot of unsolicited commercial sales stuff, sexy girl stuff, phishing stuff, and attempts to load malware through emails. Never open what should be obvious malware emails, just delete them, or forward to some gov agency. I can't remember which one or their email address. Some of them will say they are from your bank or a delivery company, the government, your utility company, or even your ISP. Most of the real versions of these entities will never contact you by email. If they do they will never ask for a fee or or any contact info, or any personal or account ID info, like your social security #. If some entity claiming to be one of the companies you do have biz dealings with does send you one of these. Don't open the email. Instead, call the company by phone to find out if they sent you the email.
6. If you do set up one of your email accounts just for family and friends, DO NOT GIVE IT OUT TO OTHERS NOT IN THAT CATEGORY! I am thinking of creating another email address, myself, that I will use just for family and friends, and just keep using my main ones on all the other stuff I already use it for.
7. If none of the above steps help, then you may have to wipe your computer and reload, to start from scratch, but do load something like AVG and an encription program as soon as you have reloaded the OS and reconfigured everything.
Just remember, we don't suicide when someone else is bad. That is a no-no. Why punish yourself for someone else's misbehavior? And we never take someone else's word that we are crazy, unless they are a professional shrink--and even then get a second opinion. |

Thank you questor. That is a very thorough list and I appreciate your help a lot.
The paranoia that's come from the possibility of this isn't going away. I don't know what to do. It's causing panic attacks more and more. I don't know what of my stuff has been gone through by who and I don't know if they'd do it again using something a virus scanner doesn't catch. If it's not a human causing these signs of account infiltration I have no clue what is going on and I am extremely scared and depressed.
I know it sounds silly to want to kill myself over what somebody else does/says but this is making it so I don't feel I can trust my own ability to know who to trust and it makes me scared and sad beyond belief. |

I am so sorry that you feel this way, CloudLayer.
This amount of emotional intensity is obviously very difficult to feel; please take great care of yourself.

Hotmail or MSN mail has had a lot of problems with people hacking into their accounts lately, and I've had to deal with it, too. Sometimes a simple fix is just to change your password. That's all I had to do, and it cleared up everything. If that doesn't help, then I would suggest using a different email provider (preferably through your internet provider, rather than web based - much more secure IMO). _________________ You can't tell which way the train went by looking at the tracks. |

Thank you Samtoo, I really appreciate your kindness.
DJFester I've changed my password about 8 times during this process, as well as my security question, and also went through this whole "account recovery process" twice but still the same problem. It might be residual, i..e account access is not still occurring but due to cookies not being cleared till recently the error message kept happening, but something very strange is or was going on.
I have gotten different email service but I am not willing to close this account when it may contain evidence of some sort (I don't have the computer skills myself to be able to tell at this point but I will look into what questor posted).
I also suspect Facebook and I don't know what else was gotten into. |
