I usually get 6-8 hours of sleep per day and I usually have plenty of energy. I can function on 3-4 hours for a day and then I crash after that. The amount day to day stress affects my energy level a lot more than the amount of sleep that I get.

you must be one of those super humans born with superior batteries that hardly ever need recharging. i knew a few of those people in the army, who insisted that anybody who slept more than 2 hours a day was just lazy. if they had my dodgy batteries though, they'd think differently. any less than 8 hours and i just can't think straight.

The only way I can tolerate less than 7 hours is if I'm able to have a short nap in the middle of the day. I don't even really have to sleep but I have to lay totally relaxed for an hour or so and then I perk up a little. If I'm sleepy all day its just like torture getting through. No motivation and barely the energy to talk. That's the problem I've always run into when working full time.

With me a lot of it has to do with the level of stimulation. I have to be really pumped up about something to function on little sleep. It still catches up to me though and my mood will crash to the absolute bottom (I'm talking an almost wanting to put a gun to my head low kind of low) once whatever excitement there was is over. It's bad enough I feel like I have to preempt it with something to put me to sleep. In ordinary circumstances I'm absolutely miserable on less than 7 hours of sleep. Needing sleep to function physically and emotionally + occasional insomnia is a pretty bad combination. Waking up too early is the worst.

i find most of the time, these days [my geezerhood twilight years] i will be so sleepy that my lights go out before my head hits the pillow, but that i wake up wide-eyed 4 hours later, and despite emptying my bladder, my best efforts to fall back asleep are just tossing and turning until my back gets sore and makes me get up out of the rack and go do something until i get tired again between 4 and 6 hours later. then i'll get sleepy and successfully doze another 4 hours or so. as i grow older i am sleeping more and more like a baby does, a few hours at a time multiple times per day. one thing to remember as one grows older though, is the importance of dreaming and dream sleep, for that is the restorative kind of sleep that the body needs to keep up on its downtime maintenance, and the lack thereof is behind much premature aging. so my thing nowadays is to say to myself as i fall asleep, a little mantra which encourages dreaming and remembering of dreams.

Hell, I've just had to get uses to really late nights and early mornings. I'm also heavily sleep deprived from my self-diagnosis, but I don't feel any tiredness, so... I'm f*cked, all things considered.

A tend to suffer if I have too much sleep. I also have trouble when I get too little, but the effect is delayed (the evening of the following day usually).

A few months ago I pulled an all nighter and ended up having no time to lie down before (evening) classes the next day, I was up over 40 hours straight and could still work, drive, and think effectively. I'm often surprised how little immediate effect this has.

That said, it does begin to show the next day (or over a series of days if you're shaving off an hour or two for several days straight).

An interesting thing I've noticed is that people in my classes like me better (objectively) when I'm sleep deprived. I guess I act less inhibited, which must be why people compare sleep deprivation to alcohol intoxication, although I can't compare since I avoid the latter.
