Here in the US, we now celebrate "President's Day" which combines the celebration of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. I would call it "Scientific Progress Day." I would celebrate it on the birthday of Galileo. As you all no doubt know, he suffered at the hands of the religious authorities because he publicized his scientific discoveries.
Yes he did and Galileo Galilei was Catholic oh the irony being presecuted by his own religious kind.
You have to wonder if he still believed in the Catholic faith after going through all that. Of course, he would tend to keep such amended beliefs to himself. I think this was around the time of the Inquisition.
After reading so many books about his life he kept his religion and sceintific research seperate. The Inquistion was a Catholic doing the prostestants that being my kind also suffered at their hands.
A lot of proestants are scienitists the methodist church is known for contribuitnig to science in it's church history. Proestants get along very well with non theists because we can simply talk about science my preacher is a fan of scienece.
I know that there are many scientists who are religious. I suspect that they believe in evolution instead of being a young earth creationist. The most secular (so to speak) religion that I know of in the west is Unitarian Universalist. Some people still want to attend church. Others, who have become atheists, are gathering at events promoted by various atheist groups, as found on meetup, com for example.
Oh yes that is true modern Jewish people only follow Judaism because of their culture not a religious reason. Christian can be secular to I am when I say I am secualr I mean that I follow my religion but I do not let it keep me from studying things like science. Max Planck was a proestant and he invented the Quanta.

Not so. There are organizations centered around professional interests, social or political causes, sports, community interests and various volunteer groups. We don't need no steeeenking religion to have some causes in common with other folks.

Who is we? If people did have those things to hold them together, wouldn't it have happened? Even if they did have some of those things in common, they aren't strong enough to do the job, not like religion has. They could someday, but today is not that day.
You can't say some arbitrary thing could fill the void of religion missing from holding things together. You could just say, "Hey, you have five fingers too, we should stick together, brother."
If you are saying that there are no organizations based on not believing in any gods, you will discover with a Google search that you are wrong. Religious people are anything but unified into a single organization. How many different religions are there?

I understand that there are some religions without a god. Buddhism is one example. I was referring to the majority of religions based on the belief in a god (or gods.)

Hmm, I just might have to get ordained. Many atheists are unaware of what atheism really is, and I'd like to spread the message in our special gathering place via skype.
Now if only I could get some cash to get me motivated to start, any givers? All donor will receive a stamped envelop for your good deed. S&H will apply in all cases.
After my first $5,000, I will consider a face to face meeting in front of my local public library, in front of the security cameras. _________________ *some atheist walks outside and picks up stick*

Yes! Especially the dates of scientific advances that are important to you.
Two cheers for Einstein's Birthday. No cheers for Carl Sagan's birthday.

I am a huge fan of Albert Einstein. Also how about a Charles Darwin day after all he is the one that came up with Evolution.
Alfred Wallace also came up with the same theory. In fact, if Wallace had not communicated with Darwin that he (Wallace) was going to publish soon, Darwin would not have published Origin of Species while he was alive.

Hmm I have never heard that befor I thought it was all Charles Darwins theory never knew some one else came up with the same theory.....so Darwin and Alfred both deserve credit for a theory that has yet to be disprooven interesting.

Both Darwin's abstract and Wallace's papers were read in front of the scientific society of naturalists. Neither was present when the abstracts were read. The papers did not make all that much of a splash, but Darwin''s book "Origin of Species" sold out very quickly on the first printing and several other printing sold out rapidly.

Interesting I do enjoy the book "Origion of Species" never knew neither was present when the abstracts were read. Why didn't the papers make that much of a splash?

I am keeping this post bookmarked so when a Christian complains about their views being attacked by atheists randomly on PPR threads they made, I can show them this (note what the OP is) and say it goes both ways and they have no argument to get special treatment. Thanks!
I appreciate you making me look good, it is rather hard to do, but you are doing a good job at it. Keep it up!
Now you might have some response to this, and my response to your obvious reply is the subliminal message in this video:

Well, thanks for the ego boost, I guess. So my single post equals that of every posts that makes funny of theism? Like my post was the great equalizer in the slap fight between atheists and theists. Hmm...
I don't know what the OP is, you're going to have to enlighten me about that.
How is my post about making you look good?
Anyways, I'm not trying to attack anyone, I'm just illustrating my point that atheism won't be able to agree on anything as far as organizing something like a holiday, and much less, a push for power in the government, at least openly. We'll have to wait for that.
I think I've done a pretty good job. _________________ *some atheist walks outside and picks up stick*

I was less under the impression that the papers 'didn't make a splash,' but other theories of change over time (the most famous, but not only, being Lamarck). The reason that Darwin is remembered for the theory rather than Wallace, and the reason that it's 'Origin' that is linked to the theory, is that, at the time Wallace contacted Darwin, Darwin had spent decades refining and collecting evidence for the theory of evolution. 'On the Origin of Species' put together such an iron-clad argument, with so many concrete examples, that it provided the 'extraordinary evidence' that Sagan more recently said must accompany extraordinary claims.
