I would like to keep this rather generic because I don't want to say anything bad about anyone in case they happen to use the same website that I do. However, I play board games at this one website and I casually mentioned how I used to be a much stronger player. Naturally, a few of the players there know that I have certain conditions that would, after all, get me to a place like this forum.

That being said, they were goading me about my comments, which were intended to be a joke in reference to humility. I was saying that while I was once a stronger player, I've been through a lot and I'm basically a rank beginner again. I then asked for advice, as though I were starting from the level of someone that never played. Instead, people continued to goad me about it suggesting that it is something like a riding a bicycle. One is apparently never supposed to forget the rules of the game, per se.

I'm very hard on myself, so I never know when to let myself off the hook about these things. How does one judge when they just need to stick things out and get a thicker skin and when to move on to preserve one's sanity? I've always had a tough time with this, since I never want to look weak. Sometimes I feel I need to grow a thicker skin or avoid bucking the system, but this kind of thinking has gotten me 'trapped' at some otherwise pretty rude forums for a long period of time.

Thank you for your thoughts!

Stop beating yourself up over what is essentially trivia. Get on with your life. When there is something wrong that you can fix--fix it. If you can't fix it, and it is something that matters, get help to fix it. Other wise, just let it go.

While I theoretically know that, I'm trying to say that I find it extremely difficult to make decisions based around that idea. I can't tell when to leave things, when to just let things slide and when to seriously try to repair things. It's a skill that I'm almost completely lacking. Right now, I have a bad tendency to treat everything extremely seriously.
